MPs. Partner is a good player, you play inverted minors. What do you think partner has and what do you bid?

Hi,

I pass, but obv. 6D is possible.
He should have 6+ diamonds, he wont have inv. values, I would guess
he is looking at a major suit singleton (spade is likely).
He could have xx or xxx in spades and xx / xxx in clubs.
In short: it is quite likely, he does not have the Ace of Hearts, and
also that you have a club looser.
To a certain extend the bid says: shut up, which I will do.

I do think, that 4 small hearts / spades and a 7 card diamond suit is
possible, 7411 may justify the bid.

With kind regards

I bid 6D. Partner clearly has lots of shape and I'm presuming that partner's other longish suit is hearts (based on probability) and is trying to shut out spades.

I pass. Preempts work. We have so many other raises available. Partner has a one in ten thousand hand, I might never see this auction again. Don't second guess partner.

Trust partner and Pass in tempo.
If it goes -500 Vs -620 congratulate him, otherwise keep your thoughts to yourself until the post mortem at least :)

Our 1D is 4+, which helps.

I would be more inclined to bid 6 if my diamond showed 3 makes it more likely partner has 8

He's bidding to make. You don't preempt your partner's opening bid.

We don't nuke four levels of bidding just to say we make game. But to each his own.

Why not, partner can have a more than legit opener and no defence to 5M (or even 6 in an extreme case)

I don't understand. You think partner could have an opening hand? I suspect you are in an extremely small minority. Construct an opening hand on which he has a reasonable expectation that the opps, one of whom did NOT overcall at the one level, have a good play for 11 tricks. Please avoid creating very low frequency freaks. Catering to freaks held by the opps, in one's constructive auctions, is a great way to lose every event you enter.

As for what he's got: imo, he likly has 7+ diamonds (or 6=5 minors), at least one short major and likely something approximating a 7321 hand. None of that is stated with great confidence beyond stressing he is very distributional. He isn't bidding 'to make'...by definition he has a hand on which he has no real idea who can make what but he thinks that applying maximal pressure affords him a two way shot. Or more. We make, or it's a good save, or both sides make a lot of tricks. One thing that nobody with whom I have ever played will have is an opening hand. An opening hand with freakish shape explores for slam. An opening hand without extreme shape forces to game.

Playing that he may have opening values or may be weak is saying that partner doesn't trust your methods and/or your judgment: he is in charge even though he can have no idea of what is right. He should play either poker or solitaire rather than a partnership game

What would 1 - 5 show in your partnership?

This shows the same thing.

IMO, the diamond and spade auctions are completely different auctions.

In classic bidding, a jump to 5 of a major asks partner to bid 6 with 1 top honor, 7 with both top honors. Without a specific agreement to the contrary, that's how I would interpret a jump to 5 of a major.

A jump to 5 is a preempt to game and not asking partner to think about slam. Maybe asking partner to think about how to hold the losses to down 1 or 2.

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense I don't think in this auction. One opp has already passed. Why preempt a single opponent who is facing a passed hand? Isn't it just as likely partner has the big hand than the guy or girl on your left? 5D doesn't have to make but the expectation should be that it won't be down more than one, and will make more often than not. Shouldn't it be the best way to describe a hand rather than just jamming the bidding no matter which side of the table you preempt, yippe kay yay.
