The whole story here is the typically silly GIB definition for South's 3C. South ignored the stupidity and bid 3C anyway, and the NS result was fine, but why on Earth should 3C show "6+ clubs" and "15- HCP"?

The GIB robots show us how "good" they are at "defending". At trick 10, BOTH East and West choose to guard the SAME suit (spades) and BOTH choose to unguard the SAME suit (hearts), allowing declarer South to take three of the last four tricks when he is legitimately entitled to only two of them.

In fairness, though, the GIB robots OFTEN commit far worse "defensive" atrocities than this.

Give a two-suiter to a GIB robot and he will very often manage to misbid it...and he can do so in many different ways, as he has proven time and time again.

The GIB robot sitting West inexplicably falls in love with his hand. His romance does not end happily for him.

Observe the "logic" and "defensive skills" of the GIB robot sitting East, as he "defends" against South's 3NT.

He wins the opening diamond lead. (Nice play.) He plays a second diamond (nice play) and wins the trick. And then...and then...and THEN at trick three the GIB robot decides that the best thing he can POSSIBLY do is to...SHIFT to a club.

Yes, leads can involve guesswork. Yes, their success or failure can be dependent on luck and on the random layout of a random hand. But why do SO many GIB robot leads appear to be bizarre and/or illogical, and why do SO many GIB robot leads work out so poorly for the (inept) GIB robots?

No, this is not a repeat of the post immediately above, but just for fun, let's start with a familiar sentence:

Yes, leads can involve guesswork. Yes, their success or failure can be dependent on luck and on the random layout of a random hand. But why do SO many GIB robot leads appear to be bizarre and/or illogical, and why do SO many GIB robot leads work out so poorly for the (inept) GIB robots?

This is a statement that I have made several times in the past, but it periodically bears repeating, since I am reminded of it every time I play with and against GIB robots:

I have never in my life encountered a human bridge player who is more consistently bad at bridge than the GIB robots are.

Something tells me the GIB robot sitting East could have pitched better...but then he probably wouldn't have been a GIB robot!

The GIB robot sitting West saw his partner East open one SPADE in first seat.

After South overcalled 2C, the GIB robot sitting West was proud and happy to support his partner by bidding two SPADES.

After North bid 3C, the GIB robot sitting West saw his partner East FREELY bid three SPADES.

So, when the final contract ended up being 5C by South, and the GIB robot sitting West was on lead, he made the PERFECTLY NORMAL and WINNING lead of a SPADE to beat the contract, right?

No. Wrong. BECAUSE he's a (hopeless, clueless, incompetent) GIB robot, he stupidly and for no reason led a heart, allowing South to take eleven tricks and score up his game in 5C - a game that probably anyone except a GIB robot would have easily beaten!

The GIB robot sitting West sees his LHO deal and open 2S. East passes and South leaps to 3NT. All pass.

The GIB robot sitting West is on lead. What does he lead?

Obviously this is a VERY easy question. He's a GIB robot (!) so of COURSE he leads what he LOVES to lead on auctions such as this. He leads a...spade (!)...because against no trump contracts he LOVES to lead the suit in which his OPPONENT has opened a weak two. I see him do it frequently.

Utterly hopeless, as usual. But let's be fair to the poor sap: Maybe ONE day it will FINALLY work out for him.
