Yeah, now that you mention it, Frick and Frack COULD have "defended" better on this one too!

East makes FOUR consecutive doubles. The first two are fine and normal in the GIBBO system, but the third double (the one of 3H) is beating a dead horse, and the fourth one didn't exactly work out so great, did it?

OMARHEUM has contributed another hand. He writes "The definition of 4H conflicts with the definitions of 2H and 3H. Furthermore, North decides his hand is worth THREE bids."

My comments:

Exactly right, OMAR. Let me take a wild guess: Your "partner" was a GIBBO robot.

Well, of course he was. Maybe it was Johnny Halfwit, maybe Donald J. Dumbo, maybe Sylvester Balboa, maybe Frick, or maybe Frack...but it was obviously one of those dimwits.

2H was normal. 3H - fair enough, it's matchpoints, so he's competing, but FOUR hearts was NOT too bright! Decent defence by NS would have beaten the EW 3S contract TWO tricks VULNERABLE for plus 200 NS even if they didn't double. Instead, thanks to Johnny (?), Donnie (?), Sly (?), Frick (?), Frack (?), or WHICHEVER GIBBO robot was in the North, NS ended up with a MINUS score in 4H.

Note that WEST also overdid things with his 3S call, bidding the suit for the SECOND time, at the THREE level, and "promising", according to his own GIB definition "3+ spades" even though his spades were J2 doubleton.

BTW, the pathetic GIB definition of 4H ludicrously claims that it shows "9+ HCP" and "9- total points". No, NO, NO, GIB! As usual, you are advertising your monumental ignorance, because (sigh, here we go AGAIN), high-card points can be less than or equal to "total" points, but they CANNOT be greater. "Total" points BEGIN with a base equal to the HCP and then if circumstances merit, additional points can sometimes be ADDED to that existing BASE of HCP. You have it BACKWARDS, clown! Go back to bridge school, GIBBO, because you know almost NOTHING about the game.

Trick two: Looking at THAT dummy in the North, the GIBBO robot in the East fails to see the urgent need to shift to a diamond.

Instead he returns the suit his "partner" led - something the GIBBO robots usually HATE to do - and on this rare hand where he DOES do it, of COURSE it's exactly the time when he SHOULDN'T be doing it!

Is the GIBBO robot theme song "Everything I Do Is Wrong" by the late, great Charlie Rich?

Diamond lead. NOT a heart lead. A DIAMOND lead...from his FOUR-card MINOR...not from his FIVE-card major.

Diamond lead...UNDERLEADING his AK-fourth, giving declarer a quick trick AND a tempo.

No, it DIDN'T work out well for EW.

And then at trick 9, with only the QJ84 of hearts and the 10 of clubs left in his hand, West is still TERRIFIED to lead a heart. He MUCH prefers to lead his now-stiff club 10, probably because CLUBS was a suit that DECLARER had played!

No, that didn't work out brilliantly either. And no, West has NOT been nominated for a Brilliancy Prize for his "defence" on this hand. And no, West did NOT get a good score on this board.

But YES, West IS a GIBBO robot.

Typical GIBBO "defence". That means wretched GIBBO "defence".

"I'm on lead," says West, talking to himself, as he is prone to do. "Now what should I lead? A club? No, my 'PARTNER' bid CLUBS, so it would be CRAZY to lead a CLUB. Hey, I have it! My left-hand OPPONENT, North, OPENED one DIAMOND, so of COURSE it must be right to lead a DIAMOND."

Spoiler alert: It most definitely was NOT right.

Another example of GIBBO overcompeting:

OMARHEUM has sent another hand. He writes "Just Declare auction. I would say North has too much for 3D. South, meanwhile, has 19 HCP but even with a likely five diamond tricks, it looks like there could well be a major suit with only one stopper, and his hand will take time to establish tricks, so 3NT looks aggressive opposite a lot of possible North hands."

My comments:

In case anyone is unaware of this, I will mention that in a Just Declare game, all the bidding of all four players is MANDATED (and by extension RECOMMENDED) by GIBBO. All human players (all in the South) therefore play the same contract after the same bidding and receive the same lead.

I will also mention that OMAR is not singing the blues because of a bad result. His result was fine. He is just attempting, as am I in ALL my posts, to alert the powers that be to the massive weakness of GIB/GIBBO.

I agree with OMAR's remarks about this hand, but I would add that the PROBLEM is not just this one random hand. As with most of the atrocities of GIB/GIBBO, the rot is pervasive. As far as I am concerned, whether or not you like the concept of inverted minors, the way GIBBO plays them is hopeless. There are many reasons for that statement, but I won't bother delving into them here, because I don't want this one post to be as long as "War and Peace".

One of the numerous issues, though, is that (as with SO many repulsive GIBBO auctions), the range of a bid is far too wide. On this hand, the "weak" (as defined by GIB) 3D has a GOOD nine HCP, including two ACES, yet I have also seen the robots make the same bid with a mere THREE HCP of the rattiest type imaginable. Furthermore, the typically lazy and pathetic GIB definition claims that the call shows "9- HCP", which literally means ZERO to nine! How on Earth is "partner" supposed to decide what is "right" when North COULD have a hand such as the one that OMAR has sent...but could ALSO have something like JXX, JXX, 98764, QXX...or an infinite number of others within such a ridiculously huge range?

Far too many GIB definitions rely only on bean-counting...and can't even put the "beans" in a "container" that is properly labelled. BTW, if you look at the GIB definition for 3NT on this hand, you will see that not only is it also typically wretched, but that GIBBO did not even follow its OWN definition for its OWN...MANDATED (!) auction! GIB/GIBBO truly, TRULY stinks, as that preceding sentence PROVES. Furthermore...

There is another issue with this hand. West led a spade, enabling OMAR to knock out the ace of clubs and take 10 tricks (five diamonds, three clubs, two spades). OMAR played properly and easily scored an overtrick in his MANDATED 3NT contract. BUT: Note that if West had led a HEART rather than a spade, OMAR would have been able to take only EIGHT tricks. Rather than scoring an overtrick, he would have been DOWN ONE. He would win trick one with a heart honour, and he could add seven more tricks with his five top diamonds and two top spades, but that would only brting him to eight, not the reqired nine. He would have to knock out the club ace...but EW would win the FIRST club and...cash FOUR hearts for down one. Now, West's lead of the spade queen wasn't as HORRIBLE as many GIBBO leads, BUT, he led from his FOUR-card major rather than from his FIVE-card major...and as far as I am concerned DESERVED the bad result that he (the GIBBO robot in the West) got. GIBBO stinks at just about everything bridge-related. It is garbage.

Trick two: Not that it really mattered on this layout, but as a matter of principle, why the HELL would West play third hand LOW with QJ5, LOOKING at that dummy?

Here's an example not only of how stupid these GIBBO pieces of trash are, but also of how inconsistent they are. The M.O.R.O.N. in the North PASSES South's 1S opener...but later LEAPS to FOUR spades. What an absolute imbecile! Seriously, were all GIBBO robots REPEATEDLY dropped on their HEADS as infants?

Imbecilic GIB definition of 2D. Why on EARTH should it be "forcing to 2NT" when North is a...PASSED HAND?

North PASSES over West's redouble. Regardless of result, why the HELL is North PASSING (!)...at the ONE (!) level...with TWO (!) four-card majors, NINE (!) HCP, NOT (!) vulnerable...after his partner South made a TAKEOUT DOUBLE of East's 1C opening?

As Jeff Westheimer asked in the 1960s, "Is this bridge, Mister?" Answer: No, it isn't. Not even close.

To add to the humour, I have on COUNTLESS occasions seen these worthless GIBBO jackasses voluntarily LEAP to FOUR of a MINOR...VULNERABLE...with far WEAKER hands and suits than North has here, after their partner makes a takeout double at the one level.

I will repeat something I have stated numerous times: I have NEVER...EVER seen even a SINGLE human player as consistently hopeless at all facets of bridge as these GIBBO monstrosities. Even the WORST human player I have EVER encountered in my many DECADES of bridge play is better than these GIB/GIBBO numbskulls. They rot, and they are an embarrassment to the game.
