20VP Swiss.

Apparently my judgment is way off.
If you'd pass, what's the weakest heart holding (if any) with which you'd bid 4H? What's the weakest diamond holding (if any) with which you'd bid 4S?
Conversely, if you bid, what's the strongest heart or diamond holding with which you'd pass?
(Clarification: Assume the rest of the hand stays the same.)

IMO Pass = 10, 4 = 9, 4 = 8
I feel that you should have at least a good fit or a good 10 HCP to bid, here.
A hard problem because partner can be quite weak, in the protective position.
I think partner should lean over backwards to double, so if he is weak, then he should have a good suit.
Hence, you should consider 4 as a possibility.
For AntonyLee's other questions, I presume he means that the rest of the hand stays the same.
  • 4 with 8 5 K Q 6 3 2 A J 9 8 8 5
  • 4 or 4 with 8 5 Q J 6 3 2 A K x x 8 5
  • Pass with the actual hand or anything weaker.

Just like one should bid (3x)-3y assuming pard has like 7-8 H, one should also assume pard has some cards (9-11?) after (3x)-pass-(pass)-3y.

This hand is just about what could be expected. Pass.

I took "a view" and bid 4H, expecting partner to correct to 4S at least some times. Got a pass with KQJTxxx Tx x Axx (looks silly to me, but what do I know), ran into a 6-0 break and lost 11 imps when our teammates were playing in 3H in the other direction...

Assuming 4H now is natural, it would show something like a 3H or 4H opening. I would be looking for KJxxxxx or AKJTxx or similar.

You'd need to add about a king of generic strength to this hand to force me to make a least-of-evils bid, probably 4S. I guess that means xx QJxxx AKJx xx is my answer to your second question.

This hand is probably a PASS if partner overcalls the preempt in the direct seat. Where partner is balancing, there is no bid to be made. As the poll clearly shows.
