Well, I would pass.

You have 10 hcp, which is less than the normal total to open. In compensation, you have some distribution. This hand seems to be pretty borderline between 1 and pass, and certainly I could see people going either way.

The problem is that if you open 1, you don't have a good rebid to partner's 1NT. You are much to weak to rebid 2 (which is a reverse), so you will probably be stuck bidding this horrible heart suit for a second time. That's unlikely to be a success.

If you had the same high card strength with better hearts (i.e. AQxx AT87xx xxx -), or if your cards were rearranged such that you can bid a second suit without distorting the hand (Axx Txxxxx AQ8x -) then opening looks good.

It fits the Rule of 20, and the Rule of 22, but it's still a bit of a stretch for me.

I would open. I have nice shape, both majors, and great controls.

(Strangest format for a hand yet).

I would be extremely surprised if it was not "expert consensus" to open 1H, though it is difficult to prove what is or isn't expert consensus.

I vote for the 2 rebid. ;)

I would open 1. It is somewhat close for me but I would be surprised if there is an "expert consensus" for passing because I think my standards for opening are a bit higher than most other people.

I am surprised that a 1H opening on this hand is not unanimous.

I'd open 1 and rebid 2 over 1 NT.

I open 1H and expect partner to bid 1S (4+ spades!) or raise hearts (3+ hearts!), or make a game forcing bid (lho didn't bid and we have 10 points) in which case I can bid 2S and not have to misdescribe my shape, or for the opponents to bid and I won't have to distort my shape. You guys are so negative! If I knew it was going to go 1H p 1N p I might consider not opening I guess.

I think i shd have made it clear that my 2 rebid will be only over 1 NT response. (fixed it) I play 1--2x--2 does not promise extras.

well, I sure prefer a 1 opening to pass.
If P doesn't bid S, you always have more or less OK 2 rebid.

I believe there is no such thing as an expert consensus. But what do I know? I am no expert... BTW I open 1 and I will rebid 2 over partners 1nt or 2.

I have no real problem with a 1 opening call but I would prefer to back in to this auction so I am inclined to pass initially
