I sometimes overcall 1N with a nice 14 count and well-positioned stoppers in their suit...

Overcalling over 1N on the other hand, yes I would with this white at matchpoints.

Completely normal overcall, I don't even feel a need to check my temperature.

This depends on the 1NT range.

Over a strong 1NT then a hand that looks like a normal weak two qualifies for an overcall.

Over a weak 1NT where our side is much more likely to have a game then you need to be stricter on your overcalls so that partner can judge how high to bid.

Having said that there are some players and partnerships that bid very aggressively even against a weak no trump. This comes with an obvious cost of not being able to bid their games accurately.

Against a strong 1NT. I might bid with the hand given but it is very minimum. I would definitely bid with better spots (much better) spots in the heart suit or even with a side king instead of a queen.

I would not overcall this against a weak 1NT.

Well firstly my 1NT overcalls are sound and have a source of tricks, not just a balanced 14 count.
Oh, you mean would I overcall a 1NT opening on the given hand? Not if I had to play 2D to show a Major. I would pass and change the system at the end of the hand. Playing MPs nv this would be a 2H bid. Playing Imps it wouldn't.

A friend of mine did this analysis of when it's right to overcall against a strong NT.

1NT Safety Analysis (by Ben Leitner)

Under pretty conservative assumptions (which are described and include optimal doubling by opps), you pretty much always want to bid with 6+ points and a 6+ suit at NV.

I think you meant "WOOLSEY IS SO GOOD IT'S BANNED!" (at least GCC due to that trick 2 overcall).

Obvious overcall at MPs, unless your system "preempts" you from doing it :)

I'm lovin' the overcall here.

2. I'd feel better about it if the agreement were HELLO, so this would show specifically hearts. I'm still coming in on this.

I would bid 2H showing hearts.
I wouldn't play a convention where I can't tell partner what my 6-card suit is at once.

This is almost right for a "funny call" I heard about that worked wonders in practice (wonders were needed). A friend of mine overcalled 1NT with almost this exact same hand with the call that showed both majors, intentionally. He was 3-6, however.

Along those same lines, in a frisky mode, I might make the call that showed diamonds and a major if I could show the diamonds and keep the major hidden until asked. If I would show hearts and a minor, heeping the diamond hidden, I'm not as interested in that approach. As 2 shows a major, I'm guessing that 2 shows hearts and a minor, which is much less interesting.

However, the actual approach, 2 to show an unknown major, appeals to me. Boring result, but interesting reason. I hope to be able to support partner's pass of 2X by passing as well, or even raising to 3.
