You're taking this Scottish thing a bit too seriously Paul. Having said that, I do fancy them to beat the Aussies on current form. Its really good to see a sh!te convict cricket team!!

Mike Denness was Scottish, played for both Scotland and England, captained England, great player but really suffered at the tantrums of Geoff Boycott (typical Yorkshireman, like me)..

Denness also played for both of my counties (Kent and Essex) and I still have some of the scorecards from those days.

Do we need any further evidence?

Akhtar and Asif have pulled out of the WC due to injury after a mysterious journey to London when the doping tests were conducted.

It seems to me the PCB are complicitly allowing their drug use.

OK then boys and girls. Pick your World Cup winners.

I'm going for Sri Lanka.

Perhaps a more pertinent question which 4 are capable of winning the World Cup? (Roland and I disagree)

Only slightly. I have Oz, SL, India and SA. You dismiss India and bring on the Kiwis.

Apart from a potentially interesting match between Ireland and Zimbabwe, still going whilst I type this...

Should the minnows be in or not?

Definitely in. How else can they gain experience against the best? Remember Sri Lanka before they got Test status? They got thrashed against the established nations, and more spanking followed for several years thereafter.

Look at SL today. Among the very best. They would not have been if they only had opponents like Canada, Kenya, Scotland, Netherlands, etc. (no disrespect).

You want cricket to be popular in other than the "Super 8" nations? Then encourage them instead of telling them that they are "not good enough to play against us".

I have a great deal of respect for Michael Holding. Great fast bowler he was, an excellent TV commentator he is. But I disagree with him when he says that the small nations should stay at home and play amongst themselves.

Personally I agree with you Roland, but it sometimes becomes farcical. Ireland - Zimbabwe, great match. Sri Lanka - Bermuda was silly.

I think it is ridiculous that the only real experience the minnows get against good teams is in the World Cup. How can they ever become competitive that way?

They need to play games against the top nations - maybe not the full international squads but against their second or third teams or U21 teams or whatever.

As for the World Cup, as things stand there are too many minnows IMO. Maybe there should be four of them - the top 3 as determined by pre-tournament competitions and a fourth, mixed, team made up of the best of the rest.

Sadly, Zimbabwe are turning into "Minnow" status themselves.

Agreed, Ireland beating Pakistan means Pakistan is already out, and Ireland likely to be in. Bangladesh may have just knocked India out of the World Cup altogether. Assuming Bangladesh are capable of beating Bermuda, then we have a weird situation where it may come down to net run rate if India beat Sri Lanka and Bermuda, and Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh, that will leave Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka tied on 4 points, with Bermuda having 0.

For Ireland not to get through it requires some strange results also. But, hey, strange results are happening, why not? The only thing confirmed from that group is that Pakistan is out. Any other 2 teams can get through, including Zimbabwe and Ireland. Suddenly the West Indies - Zimbabwe match has become very important.
