This is an easy pass. There are two reasons for this:
- Our hand was a weak 14-count. No tens, only one nine, few honour combinations. Then it got worse, ♥K2 sitting under the hearts bidder. We now have a minimum opening.
- Partner was under pressure for the 2♠ bid. It is normal to, on this auction, stretch the 2♠ bid just to get the support in. This also means that very maximum 2♠ bids instead have to take the risk to bid 3♥ or 2NT. For me the nominal range of 2♠ is 4-8 hcp. Partner can't hold the sort of maximum anymore that might make game interesting.
Also a final remark. You might think 'we do not have this 2
♠ agreement, so this logic does not apply'. I think that either reason above is more than sufficient to decide on a quick pass, the problem is just overdetermined. Also, you really should aim to support with support, and the stretched ranges are a consequence of this whether you like it or not. I think many players are secretly playing stretched ranges like this in competition, they have just never thought about it enough to make it explicit.
