Firstly, Dealer was North (apologies), so South did not pass as dealer.

This was with GIB, and 6C was specifically given as 27+ HCP.

All 13 tricks were a fairly easy make. Who, if anyone, was to blame?

I would prefer answers that work in a fairly simple 2/1 framework. I don't mind a simple convention that might work here, but nothing too esoteric.

Hi,

in a standard framework, the auction up to 3S is ok.
I prefer, that 2D is a pos. relay and 2H says I am death, ...,
leaving the rest of the bids free to show whatever you want,
things that never come up, ...,
As it is, the 6C jump killed the auction, 4C should set the suit,
asking for control bidding, 4S should then show a control.

I am still not sure, that you can count 13 tricks.

North is doing the KC ask, he will see, that the King of spades is
on board, also likely finding out, that the King of diamond is missing.
There is also the ob. q., how you reach dummy, i.e. settling for 6C
sounds reasonable. Although the auction is a bit questionable.

Even with the slower route, South never showed 3 card support.
Obviously you could argue, that South should raise 3C to 4C, but
than how do you play 3NT, when this is the spot you want to be, and
South has a 6 carder.

With kind regards

As said above, it has to be North doing the asking. 4NT as RKCB doesn't work with clubs in general, but here if you played a very basic version responding number of kings it would enable you to find 6NT with one, 7NT with two and to take your chances in 6C with none.

To do better than that you need a non standard 2C opening like mine (where 2D by Responder already promises at least a king and Opener can still impose clubs as trumps after learning about spades) and decent control bidding agreements.

You still need to be able to count 13 tricks.

7 is OK but not great if partner's trumps are J32 rather than him having the 8 for another entry.

If MPs you have to find a way to 6N rather than 6♣

This auction is massively problematic, how would it differ if partner's hand was KQJxxx, xxx, xx, xx where you want to be in 6♠ as you otherwise don't have an entry to the weak hand ?

South knows that the club jack is an entry.

The jump to 6C is terrible, N did not learn anything and punted.

True, with 11 tricks in their habd, they can expect a 12th but dummy needs to be accessed to enjoy it. So the gamble is not so huge.

7C is not lay down, say they lead H, CA, SA, C9 to J,, S ruff, C to dummy, SK discarding small D. If SQ has not come down, you have to hope DK is onside.

If my maths is correct:
- S 33 36%
- S 42 with Q 2nd i.e. 1/3 x 48% = 16%
- 50% of remaining cases for DK i.e. 24%

Stiff Q and clubs 30 might slightly alter the total of 76%, which I believe qualifies for a decent grand?

Bud bid completely in the dark after N correctly rebidding 4C, S has no easy call (4S might be passed, 5C as well so you might bid 6 with 3 trumps a side suit headed by K and another goodie, is that so obvious to then bid 7 as N? Upgrading the DQ into a K by bidding 4D will work here but not sure it is best to do regularly).

In a standard framework: would 3D be 2nd neg., the cheapest bid?
If 3S showed at least something, this would partially explain the 3S bid.
The only other explanation is, that you can play p for 1 useful card.

Because you need something to make 6.

Yes, that allows him to cash K♠ so he has one trick potentially. Partner could have A, AKx, x, 8 solid for the same 11 tricks, so they can't raise

For that matter, does South know, that North has the Ace of spades?
