This is the critical point. It's not so much what gadgets you have as how well you and your partner understand each other.
Simple is often better! Having said that, I'm adding Suction to the card today — one of the 1NT defences I've never played.

It's legal here, and I think under ACBL rules too. In my view it is one of those mystical conventions that people adopt without really understanding the costs and benefits. Whenever I pre-alerted my strong club system and my opponents started talking about Suction I felt at ease. It could just be correlation, not causation.

I think the situation over a 1NT opening is different. I still don't like suction there, but it's a different story entirely.

Suction was legal over strong club when I played it. Then about 40 years ago the ACBL got complaints from some influential players and made it illegal. Perhaps that is when CRASH and other similar stuff became popular..

Apparently over time the restrictions have been slowly lifted and lifted.

It seems today over NT multi landy also called Woolsey is most popular at the top.
And Meckwell and Don't at the club levels

As for this OP

I thought the ten was standard.
My partner expected the three since we play third and low vs suit.
Which actually can mean leading second highest from even at times
But I don't want to confuse partner even more..
