VERY aggressive bidding by my GIBBO "partner" in the North. TOO aggressive in my opinion. He has "only" 9 HCP and he knows that I have at most 21. His heart suit is okay but certainly not great, and his second suit (diamonds) is VERY weak.

Although I made the slam, because A. There were no bad breaks (a VERY pleasant and unexpected surprise on BBO!), and B. I guessed the trumps the "right" way (on THIS random layout, anyway!), it was certainly NOT a great slam. I'm STILL looking for the "11+ total points" that North's 5C bid "promised" according to the GIB definition.

And look at the typically Mondo Bizarro lead by the GIBBO dweeb in the West. The WORLD leads the spade queen on this auction, but the inimitable (thank Heaven!) Johnny Halfwit thought it was a BRILLIANT idea to lead the diamond jack, North's KNOWN second suit.

If you have chocolate chip cookies at home, go treat yourself to one right now, and while you're munching on it, you might consider that each chocolate chip probably possesses more intelligence than a GIBBO robot.

This board was played 13 timed. The top NS score of 100 % went to the only pair that bid 3NT. I'll show what happened at that table in the post (3063) immediately following this one (3062).

The remaining 12 NS pairs all bid 5D. Eight of those pairs, including mine, made an overtrick and scored 62.50 % on the board. The other four scored exactly (only) 11 tricks and scored 12.50 %.

But the reason I'm posting this hand is to show that at the 12 tables that bid 5D, the GIBBO robot in the North figured there was no reason on Earth to bother showing his...AKJ83 of spades!!!

Now, since I had a stiff 5, and therefore we had no spade fit, he LUCKED OUT...but what actual BRIDGE PLAYER would not even bother mentioning those spades (using whatever method his system prescribes)? Answer: NO bridge player would...but GIBBO robots are NOT bridge players. They are "bridge players" (note the quotation marks!) in name ONLY...and they are CERTAINLY "intelligent" in NAME ONLY, as this hand and just about EVERY hand they are EVER involved in proves!

As promised, here's the same hand described in post 3062 immediately above, but from a different table - the only table where NS bid to 3NT rather than 5D.

The purpose of this thread is always to bash robots, but never to bash humans. In the interest of honest commentary, however, I must point out that the 1C opening bid chosen by the anonymous human South was clearly incorrect, as there can be no disputing the fact that 1D is the correct opening call.

Amusingly, the GIBBO robot in the North...HERE...chose to SHOW his spades when West bid 2H. I guess at the other 12 tables, the M.O.R.O.N. was so SMITTEN by his diamonds opposite the (correct) 1D opening that he couldn't BEAR the thought of showing his spades (I.D.I.O.T.!), but here, opposite the (incorrect) 1C opening, and having no fit there, he made the NORMAL choice of showing his excellent spades.

Anyway, NS ended up in 3NT, and, as just about ALWAYS, the East-West GIBBO robots produced a completely incompetent LAUGHER of a "defence".

To start with, West made the indescribably stupid lead of the 3 of clubs from Q93 ...INTO the declarer who had OPENED ONE CLUB! Then the other M.O.R.O.N. in this East-West confederacy of dunces later pitched his club guard (!), so as usual these disgusting GIBBO numbskulls had COMBINED their "efforts" to blow the "defence".

GIBBO: Can't bid, can't lead, can't defend. Hopeless at anything and everything bridge-related.

Note the typically COMPLETELY useless, worthless, meaningless GIB definition of North's double of 6H. I've asked these questions before. I'll ask them again. Why did the creator of this GIB definition (and SO many others) even BOTHER writing it, considering that it says absolutely NOTHING useful? And, having written it, was he PROUD of his work? Did he look into a mirror and say, "Well done, Sir. That definition explains it perfectly."?

Another example of how astoundingly horrendous the GIB structure for 2C is. How the Hell can it be wise for North to bid 2NT over South's 2H? What in the world would be wrong with bidding 3C and actually SHOWING a semblance of what he actually HAS? Thank HEAVEN the designer of the dreadful GIB system didn't become an architect, a city planner, or anything else that could have SERIOUSLY impacted people's lives. At least a hopeless, illogical, antiquated, poorly structured, piece of junk bidding system won't harm anyone in real life.

Just about ANY time a GIBBO cuebids, it's imbecilic. Here, the imbecility of the bid is highlighted by the typically pathetic GIB definition: "Cue bid; 3+ diamonds; 11-21 HCP; 12-22 total points".

Note that this useless garbage tells us NOTHING that we did not ALREADY know from his earlier 1D opening bid. NOTHING!

And even within the context of that NOTHINGNESS, the useless definition is SO bad that ONLY the creator of GIB definitions could have written it!

"3+ diamonds". Yeah, we knew he had at least three when he opened 1D. Does he have 3...or 13...or anywhere in between? Who knows, because there's no upper limit and no clarification.

"11-21 HCP": A ridiculously broad ELEVEN point range! NS are already at the upper ranges of the THREE level, and North hasn't shown whether his strength is SUB-MINIMUM or in the range of a TWO CLUB opener!

"12-22 total points". The same HOPELESSLY vague ELEVEN point range...ADDED to the fact that no NS fit has yet been identified, so there is so far no RATIONALE for "total" points, AND...also ADDED to the fact that GIB has shown time and time again that it knows NOTHING about "total" points.

Furthermore, what is the INTENT of this LUDICROUS cuebid?

Does it confirm a club fit? Who knows? Does it deny a club fit? Who knows?

Does it show a spade stopper? Who knows? Does it deny a spade stopper? Who knows?

Does it show a big hand? Who knows? Does it show a spade CONTROL? Who knows?

NOBODY knows ANY of these things, because whoever designed the HORRENDOUS GIB bidding system and whoever composed the HORRENDOUS GIB definitions did not ever bother explaining ANY of these key issues or even defining the INTENTION of the cuebid. These abject, despicable failures are perhaps why the HORRENDOUS GIB/GIBBO robots persist in committing these useless, meaningless, self-destructive cuebids time after time for NO logical reason. No wonder the GIB robots stink at bridge when they have been equipped with such useless garbage for a system and with the worst and most pointless definitions ever written anywhere. Maybe someone never heard the expression "If you're going to do something, do it right."

Here's another imbecilic cuebid, 3H this time. THIS pathetic joke is defined (extremely poorly, as always) by GIB as "3+ hearts; 3+ spades; 9+ HCP; 10+ total points; forcing to 3NT". How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways.

"3+ hearts" and "3+ spades" provide no new info, as North's earlier double had ALREADY provided both those bits (and I mean the word "bits" LITERALLY, because they sure as Hell are no MORE than BITS!) of information, and...

It's actually misinformation, because...North LIED with BOTH his double AND with his PATHETIC cuebid here. He made the same STUPID lie TWICE, because he does NOT have "3+ hearts" - he has only two.

The bid claims that he has "9+ HCP", yet it ALSO claims that it's "forcing to 3NT". Given that, as per the GIB definition, he could have as few as 9 HCP, why would he be FORCING to 3NT? Note also that he (like ALL GIB/GIBBO robots!) is so MASSIVELY stupid that he has no idea WHATSOEVER about right-siding a hand! GIVEN that this absolute M.O.R.O.N. has chosen to "force to 3NT", why the HELL does HE not just BID 3NT? HE has the KING OF HEARTS! He's in front of (!) the enemy 2H bidder! If HE (North) bids 3NT, his heart king will be protected on the opening lead! If his "partner" South lacks a heart stopper, 3NT might MAKE from the North side, but not from the South. Furthermore, if South has no heart stopper, how the HELL can he (South) bid this 3NT that North is so obsessed with "forcing" to? If the M.O.R.O.N. in the North thinks that 3NT is right, then the jerk should just BID it!

We scored 62.50 % on the board for going one down in 4D, which had NO PLAY with West on lead. Note that if North had simply BID 3NT instead of making his typically STUPID cuebid of 3H and "forcing" to 3NT, the contract would have been COLD from his (North's) side on the lead of a spade...OR a heart...OR a diamond. It would have failed ONLY on a club lead followed by a heart shift at trick two or three. THAT defence would beat 3NT four tricks EVEN from North's side (indicating that North's lunatic 3H cuebid "forcing to 3NT" might not have been the most brilliant evaluation of all time).

ANY time my GIBBO "partner" makes a cuebid, I expect a disaster, and ANY time it's NOT a disaster I feel that we've been lucky and dodged a bullet, because whoever designed this wretched GIB bidding system and whoever wrote these execrable GIB definitions succeeded in creating a recurring recipe for disaster with the hopelessly braindead GIB/GIBBO robots. GIB/GIBBO is a joke - a BAD joke.

The wretched BIDDING that you would expect from a GIBBO robot: East has shown the RED suits after NS have bid BOTH black suits. In response to East's takeout double, West, who has the K1094 of HEARTS does NOT bid 2H on his KNOWN fit. The typically incompetent, braindead GIBBO droke bids...INT...on his spade "stopper" of J54.

The wretched "DEFENCE" that you would expect from GIBBO robots: At trick three, East POPS his heart ace. WHY? At trick five, East shifts to the club 10. WHY? At trick six, East POPS his spade ace. WHY? At trick seven East stupidly plays a second club, rather than a DIAMOND that would promote West's jack. At trick eight. rather than giving East the club ruff he so DESPERATELY craves, West STUPIDLY tries to cash his heart king, which "succeeds" ONLY in establishing dummy's queen.

GIB/GIBBO = worst bidders, worst "defenders".

Oh, and by the way, they're also the worst opening leaders and the worst "partners".

And even their declarer play is not particularly good.

And, have I mentioned that the GIB system stinks and that the GIB definitions are the worst ever written ANYWHERE (not just in bridge!)?

My usual rant about the silliness of GIBBO in opting for a transfer rather than using Stayman. And of course my usual admission that many human players, including some good ones, opt for the same style as GIB regarding Stayman. Fine. Let them continue doing so, but I will continue to FIRMLY believe that Stayman can be used in a MUCH more efficient way in a DECENT system.

Here, North actually DOES use Stayman. Bravo - although I'm not quite sure WHY the GIBBO robot uses it here, given their normal AVOIDANCE of Stayman in such situations.

When, I, South, respond 2D, North bids 2S - EXACTLY as I would do in "my" system. Bravo again. EXCEPT that in "my" system, 2S would be for PLAY, whereas here, in the (hopeless, in my opinion) GIB system, North's (silly, given his system and definition!) 2S call is defined as "Invite major; 4+ hearts; 5+ spades, 9 HCP". First, the M.O.R.O.N. does NOT have the "9 HCP" that he "promises". Second, why the Hell is he "inviting" with the vanilla hand he has? Hopeless as always! Hopeless system. hopeless robots. Note that even though I have a MAXIMUM (17 HCP), 4S has NO play.

Yes, I realize that we COULD construct some South hands where 4S would make, but I suspect that they would be in the minority. The NORMAL contract here should be a spade partial, but going overboard occurred because GIB robots have a wretched system and aren't even disciplined enough to follow their own always wretched GIB definitions. GIB stinks. Maybe it was okay back in the Dark Ages. I can't comment on those long-ago days because the first time I ever played with or against GIB robots was in 2017, but for as long as I have played with them (9 years so far), GIB has ALWAYS been garbage...the WORST garbage.

I have mentioned on several occasions that when I play in a game with three GIBBO robots I frequently operate or "experiment", doing things that I would never dream of doing in a game with a human partner and human opponents. Why? Several reasons:

1. I have respect for all human players, be they partner, teammate, or opponent, be they strong, weak, or in between...whereas I have nothing but complete and total contempt for the GIB system, the GIB definitions, and the GIB/GIBBO robots.
2. I know going into a game with three GIBBO robots that my "partner" will be a hopeless, worthless I.D.I.O.T. and that my opponents will be equally horrendous.
3. It's fun to experiment, and it's something that I could and would never do in "real" bridge with humans.
4. More often than not my operations and experiments work out well. If that were NOT true, then...DUH...I would stop doing them.
5. Even on the fairly rare occasions where they do NOT work out well, I might still enjoy the experience and I might still learn something from it for future reference. And in any case, I am not hurting a partner or teammate as I would if I committed some silly backfiring experiment in a "real" game with humans.

Now, here is an "experiment" that did NOT work out well. I'm reporting it not to bash myself (although I certainly bear some responsibility for the poor result), because this entire thread is never about bashing myself or any other human. As per the title that Diana gave the thread, it is always about bashing GIB...so here we go:

My 1NT opening is not exactly the biggest operation of all time. I have only 14 HCP and I have five hearts, so the "textbook" opening is 1H, rather than 1NT (which shows 15-17 HCP). If this had been my ONLY "experiment", however, the hand would not have been worth even the TINIEST thought of being posted. It's because of what follows that I'm writing it up.

West now bids 2C, showing an unspecified single-suiter, and North leaps to 3NT. East passes. HERE is where I REALLY step out of line with an experiment. Having chosen to open 1NT initially, I think the NORMAL thing to do here would be to pass...but since I'm playing with three execrable GIBBO robots, I decide to break discipline and "experiment". Having seen only my own hand so far, my assumption is that West's suit is clubs, and that a club lead might beat 3NT. I decide to bid 4H, hoping that it's "right" to do so on whatever the random layout is for this random hand. I'm ALSO hoping that - assuming 4H is the "right" spot - North will pass.

West passes, but sadly North doesn't. He bids 4S. Groan! I don't know his hand, but I'm not overly happy. Anyway, East also passes. I look at my hand again. I have no option EXCEPT to pass and hope that we survive the board. And there's actually a reason for some optimism, because my cards should provide a decent dummy in spades. I have three GOOD trumps (AQ8), the ace of diamonds, five pretty good hearts, and a ruffing value with my 97 dub of clubs (so, no wasted values in what I am still assuming is West's suit). Could be a LOT worse!

Well, we don't survive it. We go down FIVE (!) for minus 500! Considering this horrible result, I'm actually pleased that we're lucky enough to score 17.9 % on the board, since I would have expected a zero! Now, I'm quite prepared to take (some of?) the blame for this poor result, BUT...let's now look at what NORTH did!!!!!

First, LOOK at his 3NT call!!! It's defined as "2-5 clubs; 2-5 diamonds; 2-4 hearts; 2-4 spades; 10-15 HCP". Well, let's see about that:

His HAND is...652, VOID (!!!), QJ7, KJ86543!!! He does NOT have "2-5 clubs" - he has seven!!!. But that is the LEAST of his transgressions! He does NOT have "2-4 hearts" - he has NONE! AND, perhaps most importantly, he does NOT have "10-15 HCP" - he has a MERE...SEVEN!

Why the HELL is this total I.D.I.O.T. bidding 3NT??? Surely, he should be bidding CLUBS, using whatever method (likely a hopeless one, since it's GIB) the GIBBO robots use to show CLUBS in this situation.

But then it gets even MORE laughable and MORE pathetic, because over my (admittedly strange) bid of 4H, the GIBBO C.R.E.T.I.N. in the North bids...four spades! If he wants to run, which, given his hand - the hand that he has already GROSSLY misdescribed!- seems reasonable, surely he should be running to CLUBS (his SEVEN-card suit headed by the KJ) rather than SPADES (his THREE-card suit..."headed" by the lowly SIX!!!).

To boot, as these GIBBO slimebags SO often do, he ignores his own GIB definition of 4S, which states that it shows "2-5 clubs; 2-5 diamonds; 2-4 hearts; 4 spades; 10-15 HCP".

Had I hypothetically conducted my experiment here with a HUMAN partner (which I would never actually do), I would feel incredibly guilty afterwards and would repeatedly apologize profusely. Having actually done it with a GIBBO "partner", however, I feel ZERO guilt, and my CONTEMPT for GIB/GIBBO has only INCREASED - as it does with just about every hand I ever play with or against these GIBBO monstrostities, because on just about every hand they do something MIND-BLOWINGLY stupid. GIB/GIBBO is the bottom of the barrel, the worst of the worst, the lowest of the low.

Trick five: The indescribably stupid GIBBO trout in the West leads the diamond king, allowing me to win ELEVEN tricks instead of the TEN that SHOULD be the limit of the hand.

GIB/GIBBO rots. GIB/GIBBO is the worst ever. GIB/GIBBO is a joke - a BAD joke.

The definition of 3S is the usual total garbage that we have come to expect from GIB definitions: "5+ diamonds; 21- HCP; 3- card diamonds; rebiddable spades; 18-22 total points". Just stop to consider that someone actually took the time to write this ridiculous drivel...and presumably thought that he was doing a GOOD job! That in itself is not only astounding, but also hilarious. How deluded would a person have to be to think that his GIB definitions were good?

This ludicrous definition begins by saying that South has "5+ diamonds", but then an instant later claims that he has "3-card diamonds". The HCP are lazily and sloppily described as "21-", which literally means zero to 21, and is therefore so ridiculously broad a range that it is completely useless. The statement about "18-22 total points" is equally useless, because ANY mention of "total" points by GIB is ALWAYS useless, since whoever wrote these consistently pathetic GIB definitions has proven time and time again that he knows NOTHING about "total" points. In addition to writing the worst definitions in the history of mankind, the author also quite obviously never bothered to proofread the nonsense he wrote and never bothered to have anyone else proofread it either.

The definition of 3NT is - surprise, surprise (not REALLY!) - another piece of complete garbage: "4- hearts; 4- spades; 8+ HCP; 8- total points; stop in spades; stop in hearts". Let's look at some of the fantastically stupid bilge from that definition:

Why the HELL must he have "4- hearts"? GIB's complete ignorance of "total" points is then revealed with the dual I.D.I.O.C.Y. of "8+ HCP points" and "8- total points", because (sigh!) HCP can be less than or equal to "total" points, but they CANNOT be more, for the simple reason that "total" points begin with a base of the HCP and then ADD points for distribution, if applicable. The author of this typically wretched GIB definition has things exactly backwards! Furthermore, why would "total" points even be in the discussion, considering that North is bidding no trump? "Stop in spades". Why the HELL would he need a "stop in spades"...after South's 3S was earlier defined as showing "rebiddable spades"???!!! AND...there is NO mention of a "stop in clubs"...which SHOULD be a requirement for the 3NT call, since West has shown hearts and...CLUBS!!! By the way, not only is it STUPID for the definition to require a "stop in spades" (the suit that SOUTH bid!) but NOT in clubs (the suit that WEST bid via 2NT), but North does NOT have the "stop in spades" that the hopeless definition claims he does! This GIB definition is one of the worst pieces of junk I have ever seen anywhere.

The definition of 4S then repeats the same imbecilic error from the definition for 3S. It now (correctly, which is a HUGE surprise for a GIB definition!) begins by stating that South's auction shows "6+ diamonds"...but an instant later reverses itself and claims that the bid shows "3- card diamonds"! A schoolchild would fail his course if he handed in an assignment with such obviously contradictory, sloppy, lazy, incorrect, unchecked...GARBAGE!

North then bids as ONLY a stinkingly useless GIB/GIBBO robot can, by making his utterly INSANE leap to SIX diamonds! I guess the C.R.E.T.I.N.O.U.S. jackass fell in love with his FABULOUS trump "support" of...73 doubleton!

I actually scored 82.1 % (!!!) on this board for going down "only" two tricks in this LUDICROUS 6D contract...undoubtedly because the other humans in the game were also handicapped by playing with a braindead piece of GIBBO trash as their "partner".

GIB has the worst system I have ever seen. And for SURE GIB has the ABSOLUTELY worst definitions I have EVER seen ANYWHERE, not JUST in bridge. The GIB/GIBBO robots are among the worst "bridge players" I have ever encountered. GIB/GIBBO is nothing but absolute garbage - top to bottom, front to back, side to side.

At trick seven, after considerable "thought" (yes, there was a distinct PAUSE before North played his card), North correctly covered the heart jack with his queen. Bravo. But then at trick eight the ignoramus STUPIDLY played his NINE (!!!!!) of hearts from his remaining 1096. These stunningly stupid, perpetually hopeless GIBBO pieces of dirt can't get even the SIMPLEST things right. The M.O.R.O.N.'s incorrect play managed to fool me (when I foolishly thought that for ONCE he might actually be playing the proper card), which didn't matter since declarer was always going to take 10 tricks anyway, but on some OTHER random hand, such GIBBO imbecility could easily cost...and even if it NEVER cost, it would STILL be an egregious error!

Maybe one day BBO will get rid of the GIB/GIBBO trash and replace it with decent robots, a decent system, and decent definitions. Wouldn't that be nice? And wouldn't that be GOOD for BBO ITSELF in this modern era where several competing bridge sites have sprung up?

Until then, I guess those of us who are LOYAL to BBO and who enjoy robot games will have to continue ENDURING the disgusting, nauseating GIB system, definitions, and robots. Ah well, c'est la vie.

Now let's continue with the mission of this thread, which is to expose GIB in all its worthless "glory".

Here's one of the countless examples of how antiquated and how HOPELESS the GIBBO system is. Note North's transfer (3C) to 3D. Maybe the creator of GIB never learned that majors score better than minors. Maybe he never learned that it's better to play a partial at the two level than the three level. Maybe he never considered a BETTER way to play Stayman than the lousy way he plays it.

In a DECENT system ("mine" for example, although there are several others also), North would bid Stayman over South's 1NT opener. If he found a spade fit, which sometimes he would, it would be great. If not, the roof would NOT cave in, because in a DECENT system, he would have methods to then get out in 3D anyway.

On THIS random board it wouldn't have mattered. We have no 4-4 spade fit, so playing a DECENT system we would have ended up in 3D, just as we did here...but on MANY other random hands, we WOULD have a spade fit, we WOULD easily find it, we WOULD play in a higher-scoring strain (spades rather than diamonds) and we WOULD play at a lower and therefore safer level. Too bad this was all beyond the scope of whoever created the truly wretched GIB bidding system.

We scored 82.1 % here for down one in 3D.

Is it really wise to make a pre-emptive 2H call...with a 5-6-1-1 (!) shape...opposite a partner who opened the bidding?

Yeah, we scored 89.3 % on the board anyway, but we were playing against two M.O.R.O.N.S., or to use a more polite SYNONYM, two GIBBO robots.

Why is East leaping to 4S with his minimum?
