This hand recently came up:

I decided to throw in a double of 6, not out of any real conviction, but mostly just to see if the Robot would lead a club (it didn't - it led the 2). Fortunately, the contract failed by a trick.

The same auction (minus the final double) occurred at fourteen other tables, and at each of those tables, the Robot led the A. At the last table, South doubled a round too early (the 5 cue bid by East), and that "scared" West into bidding just 5 (making, which gave that South a very poor score).

You were already lucky not to find yourself in 7x :)

I think West overbid here.

The Robot doesn't always treat doubles as takeout. In fact, I just played a hand, that I want to give the Robot credit for:

I will include the bidding from worst scoring (North-South) to best scoring.

At one table (down 2, -200):

At one table each (down 1, -100):

At two tables (making, +70):

At one table (making, +90):

At five tables (making, +90):

At one table (making, +120):

At three tables (down 3, +150):

At my table (down 3, +500, +9.5 IMPs):

It did surprise me when the Robot doubled, particularly when the explanation said "biddable spades" (I thought "that would mean that East-West have ended up in a 3-3 fit," and sure enough, they did). Well done, Robot, especially with a minimum opening hand, and poor spade spots.
