TEAMS: Regular Teams Matches on BBO

The upcoming Polish Teams Challenge has caused a great stir of interest on BBO.

In response, I've set up an Acol Teams Group, the "Acol Alligators". Every Acol player I've canvassed has expressed interest in Teams play. At present count we cd just about field 2 Teams of 6 players, 4 fielded + 2 reserves (3-4 reserves per team might be an idea). And more wd probably be interested.

Today I received our 1st Teams Challenge from that redoubtable Primate Group, the "Funky Gibbons"!!! Am hoping that primate funk can be overcome by reptilian guile :)

If anyone is interested in regular informal and friendly Team Matches on BBO on say mid-week Tuesday or Thursday, or weekend Saturday or Sunday evenings UK time or whatever mutually suitable days/times can be agreed upon pls contact me, Allan.

We might aim to have a Premier Team (Advanced and above) and a Second Team (Intermediates and below) ... possibly, if numbers were sufficient, a Third Team too.
That way players of a very wide range of abilities and experience cd have a go against similar strengthed opposition.

AND FOR THE BBO ADMINS & SOFTWARE CHAPPIES:

Is the Teams format fully Teams as such or is it only Pseudo-Teams? Have got the impression that in the big worldclass events there are 4 rounds and not just 2. Would be grateful for enlightenment on this tech point.

Kind regards to all and sundry

Allan

The "Big World Class events" are run in lots of different ways.

What often happens is a combination of a round robin and a KO.

Assume for the moment that we end up with 72 team in total.

Break those teams into 8 pools of 9 teams.

Structure a round robin so that each team plays the other 8 teams in its pool.
Eliminate the bottom 5 teams from each pool, reducig the field to 32 teams.

Then progress with a 5 round KO in which each team plays 32 (or maybe even 64 boards) in head to head competition, leaving one team left standing.

Alternatively, the ACBL often progresses to straight KOs as quickly as possible.

As I said, it will be interesting to see how this gets arranged.

oooohhhh, TX Oh Mighty Hrothgar!!! [Allan re-inserts teeth]

Quite complex the options in these things then.

Apart from the Polish Teams Challenge, I was thinking of the very small Teams Matches on BBO e.g. our hopefully upcoming Acol Alligators v. Funky Gibbons Jungle Thump-Up.

These sorts of matches occur on BBO now, but wasn't sure if the BBO Tourney facility fully supported a Full Teams event yet - 4 rounds rather than a simple 2 ... or whatever ... my cognitive powers grow somewhat nebulous at this point :)

Cheers, little me

PS You look so Nordic in your pic ... or was it just bl**dy hot?

Just Bloody Hot

I spent a couple months in Spain and Morocco last Spring - 4 weeks walking across Spain on the Camino de Santiago de Compestella, cut down South to Morocco for 3 weeks, then worked my way back North to Madrid.

I picked up a Tuareg style turban way down South in Morocco. Its remarkably practical headgear for a hot and dry climate. For what its worth, the pciture is from Granada in Spain.

soots ya :)

So you're Hrothgar the Tuareg ... and here's me thinking you were Norse or mock-Norse.
But the Vikings were adventurous folks and no doubt cd easily have got down to the Land of Oranges and assumed your very practical garb.

Am envious of your sojourn in Granada, tho the heat wd have zonked me out or perhaps I'd just turn into an Orange ... "going native in citrus-fashion".

Cheers, Allan

Many thanks for your post. I was always curious about your picture, but a bit reluctant to ask (possibly an erroneous politeness).

I was born in England, moved with my parents to South Africa when about 7 years old and a year later to Canada, where I lived until a year ago (I'm 57 now). About a year ago (i.e. last September) my wife and I moved to Costa Rica which is now home. It's a Spanish speaking country and we are still struggling, despite months of (very good) lessons in the language that ended about a year before we moved (the hiatus is undoubtedly part of the reason we are still struggling).

My best friend is a bit of an adventurer, having taken "sabaticals" (well not from academia, but very extended vacations of several months) to travel (mainly on foot, hitchhiking and buses) in various parts of the world. I admire someone who has made the effort to find out, first hand, about the world and its diverse culture. WELL DONE.

Cheers,
JRG

little me again

I'D LIKE TO GET "FRIENDLY" TEAMS PLAY ORGANIZED AS A REGULAR FEATURE ON BBO.

Being an Antediluvian Acolite I've naturally sounded out any likely looking Acol player who might be interested in playing Teams. No-one! has said they're not interested and I now have 12+ Acol players raring to have a go. The Polish Knockout isn't going to satisfy them so I'd like regular FRIENDLY Teams Matches to somehow get up and running on BBO.

I've quizzed the powers that be and the best they can come up with is to trawl for Team Opps via BBF here. BBF has, however, been the source of our 1st informal fixture versus the Funky Gibbons, who conveniently are British/European too as regard Time Zone.

Our Team/s is/are called the Acol Alligators and we cd at present field a strongish "Premier" team + a more basic Intermediates & below team ... and quite possibly a 3rd and even 4th Team too.

I'd prefer that BBO Teams events were properly graded so that Advanceds/Experts played other Adv/Experts, and Intermediates & below played other Intermediates & below. Intermediates would probably straddle both strength levels and so shd be prepared to play at both A/E and I/Novice/Beginner.

Perhaps Midweek (tho NOT Wednesdays*) afternoons/evenings + Sunday and/or Saturday afternoons/evenings cd be a regular "Meet" for BBO Teams play.

Am open to all sensible offers and suggestions.

Kind regards, Allan

*cascade/Wayne Burrows' Acol Teaching Table is on Wednesday evenings

Hrothgar and I would probably be interested in wiping the floor with you, particularly if Dogsbreath was playing. It would be good to play against my old friend Martin Devlin.

Oh Mighty Hrothgar and Ever Estimable Hoggy

Who are your 2nd pair, lads?

Have got several Alligators writhing and wriggling in ancticipation:

Pair 1: JAPIE2 + Paul15 (if avail);
Pair 2: a suitable mélange of dogsbreath, OliverC and byroner

RESERVES: anyone gullible enough :)

I'm providing a stretcher for my poor souls + free transfusions of Tomato Ketchup.

Possible DATE/TIME this Sunday evening 7.30-8 PM start UK time, US afternoon? Or can u suggest a mutually suitable DATE/TIME. Will try to adapt.

TTFN, Allan [weeping in advance]

Hi Allan/all

I would have been daft enough to play the mighty Hrothgar etc but I'm away this weekend but would love to try another time!

I'd have nothing to lose with 1yrs experience it would be like Dover from Vauxhall Conference beating Man U (UK Soccer reference)... or winning the lottery...

I think the teams league option would be a great way to play 'relatively' competitive bridge against good players with different systems in case I ever play face to face with similar systems!!!

I'll be happy to arrange a game some time.
One point to note: The BBO KO match is running on a very tight schedule.
Short term, I need to give priority to these matches

regards,

Richard

Let's not forget the forcing club and diamond folks here in Tampa...would be interesting in seeing how some of you would handle a light opening system just for the entertainment value...

Fair point, Richard

Let's put the MOSCITOs v. Antediluvian Alligators onto the back-burner until the waters have settled re the Polish Knockout Qualifiers.

And Dwayne if you want to play Teams v. the AAs we're ready and waiting for ya in our Carboniferous Swamp :)

Cheers both, Allan

I will also inquire to see if our bright intermediates here in the Tampa Bay area would be interested. With the diverse players we have here, it shouldn't be much of a problem. ;D
