Quick question: does anyone know a safe download site for a PDF converter? I use Wordpad and some of these files I need in PDF but not enough to buy Word. Thanks.

Not quite what you are asking for, but Open Office Write will read any Wordpad document and has good PDF export capability and is 100% free/safe.

Windows 10 systems have a printer called "Microsoft Print to PDF". If you cannot find it refer to https://answers.micr...53-1da9029d8357

The Foxit PDF reader includes a Foxit Print to PDF printer too - https://www.foxitsof...com/pdf-reader/ - this product is free and, as far as I know, perfectly safe (I've had no problems and I use it daily). Installing this would make the PDF printer available in Wordpad.

Thanks both. Let me clarify what my problem is. I use Windows 7 and do not have Office, so I write using Wordpad. I need to be able to convert these RTF files to PDF in order to send them out as PDF.

Sounds to me like both would work.
Your problem is rather Windows 7 which is unsupported as from 14th January.

According to OpenOffice webpage, the latest version works well with Win7 (see https://www.openoffi...ct/windows.html)

I used OpenOffice regularly in the past and I found its ability to convert various MS-Office file types into OpenOffice compatible versions and/or PDF was very useful.

At the risk of re-igniting flame wars between open source communities, LibreOffice (https://www.libreoffice.org/) is a far superior product to OpenOffice these days and ideal if you want a free and compatible alternative to Microsoft Office. It also has a native print to PDF.

(LibreOffice is the result of an open source war and is a fork of OpenOffice, but has moved forward (from the same base) with a much larger development team and support)

The simplest option is "print to PDF" which should be a part of wordpad already - just pretend to print and select "PDF" as your "printer" when prompted.

PS I agree that LibreOffice is better than OpenOffice. In fact it's so much more advanced that often people assume someone misspoke when they hear "OpenOffice" and correct it like a grammar mistake.

I use Google Docs though as it's the most compatible option (Linux, Windows, ChromeOS, Android, ...) and whenever I need something from it, it is either already implemented or there's a browser plugin for it.

Are you sure Wordpad could print to PDF back in Windows 7? I've been on 8 and 10 too long to recall now.

My current challenge is to insert ♣♦♥♠ symbols in a document, preferably with the red suits in red. It's a pain in OpenOffice Write/Calc unless I am missing something (currently I copy and paste the special character and leave it uncoloured). Can LibreOffice or Google Docs help?

Yes I have someone's code that converts !s !h !d !c into coloured suit symbols in google docs. If you can't find it in a search send me a private message and I will share it with you.

I'm pretty sure "print to PDF" has been a feature for a long time now.

About symbols, yea I still am not sure. In Google docs, I have just used find and replace to get some symbols. When I was younger, I would make system descriptions in LaTeX where I'd use custom shortcuts. Although not even those would be in colour.

I understand the reluctance to branch out. I'm a long time Word and Excel user and I have the latest versions on my desktop. For what it's worth, I've rarely used Word or Excel since I started using Google docs a few years ago.

Similarly, I download the latest LibreOffice every month or two but almost all of my work in done in Google Docs these days. My system notes, which is really too large and eclectically formatted, is the only major document not maintained in Docs; even my various WBF system cards have been migrated.
