Matchpoints, both vul. You play 5cM with a weak NT and short club (so 1D is 5+ unless 1444/4441).

I was under the impression that NFBs are not used at the 3-level anyway.

3. Playing strong NT there might have been a case for pass, but playing weak NT that's not an option.

I play negative free bids up to 3 which is jolly useful given that so many players use weak jump overcalls these days. This hand fits the criteria perfectly, especially red/red, 6 card suit and maximum of 10 HCPs.

Either that or you incorporate 2NT as some sort of Puppet/Lebensohl-style bid to show this hand, but then you lose 2NT as a natural bid here.

I rank
  • Pass = NAT. Presumably, if partner holds a balanced 15+, then he opens 1 rather than 1.
  • 3 = NAT. It's a bidder's game.
  • Double = NEG. Only with the agreement that this just shows competing values.

Pass - expecting partner to protect.

Given what's on the card nothing but pass holds any appeal at all.

Thanks all. I passed, and we missed game:

Partner didn't want to risk 2NT (15-17) opposite what could be a very weak hand. I felt therefore I was supposed to bid 3C - after all I can always pass a 3D rebid - but it seems others here disagree. How do you suggest partner reopens here?

If you are playing in a majority 15 - 17 nt field it's a sticky wicket to overcome a potential methods fix, however ...........

With a potential source of tricks in diamonds 2nt is LESS risky than 3 which on a bad day may win the same number of tricks so I think your partners radar was off and especially since they took 3 opposite a very weak hand with that suit out of play.

Something like AQJTx looking at a possible loser there to go with 5 spades is more of a reason to shy away from nt but wherever else those pts are probably gives you a better option than 3 without having 6 of them.

As you stated in the opening post that 1D is likely a 5-card suit, I wouldn't repeat the suit. If you play that double just promises values, then this may be the most flexible bid. 2NT would be the second choice.

When playing a weak NT, I like the idea that a 1m opener should be assumed to be a strong NT unless proven otherwise. In this case, bidding 3C is what you would do. Occasionally being too high opposite some 4H5D hand is OK, missing all the games opposite a 15-17 NT is a disaster.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

1-You did not miss game for passing 2 as it was asked to us. You missed game because you passed 2 and you also passed 3. There is a huge difference. I think you owed pd a 3 cue with your 10 hcp and half stopper in spades, having already passed 2.

2-I do not like partner's 3 but that was not the reason why you guys missed the game imo as I stated above.

3- 3 over 2 is game force, therefore unless you already decided to play game, it is out of question.

I personally would pass 2 and bid 3 over 3.
Another option is to start DBL and hope pd does not bid hearts. And if he does, won't be the first or last time you play a 4-3 fit ( hopefully undoubled.)
