Your read is clear, RHO tanked about raising clubs. RHO is a BIL.

A lead (Standard leads), RHO plays 8 (unknown carding)

It seems that heart 3-3 is too easy. Probably W has Qxx in spade, two hearts and diamonds and AKQxxx in club and we has to estabilish diamond suit.

LHO cannot have 4 hearts or would have doubled 4s. Given that, we might try spade K then ak of hearts and a heart up. That gives us 3-3 hearts, any time lho is 2-2 in the majors. If he ruffs from 3-2 he might return a spade giving you the chance to make if the diamonds come in.

This seems worse than just playing to bring either the spades or the diamonds in for no loser. Ruff lead, spade to the K and the spade finesse makes any time both diamonds and spades are 3-2 and either of the Q's are onside. It also might make sometimes when rho has 4 spades.

I guess the first line probably also works sometimes when east has 4 spades. You get to trump coup one spade loser away if its Qxx diamonds in the slot.

Does anyone else wish we were in 6d ? but I digress.

It is not often one get to try the best play for a suit in isolation but this is an ideal hand for such a play since we are very close oto making if we pick up the spade suit for no losers. IMHO

trick 1 ruff (yay)
trick 2 spade to K if either opps shows out don't buy any lottery tickets today) odds of making just plummeted to close to zero
trick 3 spade intending to finesse J if rho follows low.

If the J loses OR if rho started with 4 trumps (if lho started with 4 trumps we intend to draw trumps ASAP and put all of our eggs in the dia suit breaking 32 with the Q onside. At the very least we try to make by making the best play of our 2 long suits in isolation.

If the spade J holds and trumps break 32 we try the following
trick 3 wind the sapde (yay)
trick 4 draw the last trump (yay) pitch a club
trick 5 exit with the heart T (who knows maybe lho holding QJx(x) will duck) assuming that loses
trick 6 ruff the club return

We are now in position to try for the 33 heart break or a red suit squeeze (if the finesse seems inferior) or the dia finesse
trick 7 last trump (pitch a dia) this reduced our hands to

void
x
AKJ76
void

void
AK53
82
void

trick 8 heart A
trick 9 heart K (if 33 hearts (yay) hand is over
If hearts not 33 fall back on dia 32 and Q onside

This is not all that dissimilar to the line where we have a trump loser but we improve our odds of success by trying for a 33 heart break as well.

all right fess up

I also thought of a couple of other variations if picking up trumps was successful.

cash the dia AK hoping the Q would fall and *falling back on hearts 33 OR 42 with QJ doubleton
cash the heart AK and if nothing good happens* fall back on 32 dia break and finesse working

These both work on the given hand so what did you do?

Rely on diamonds breaking of the queen onside

I didn't put much attention, original is right, there was no 9 on my hand.
