IMPS

2 = multi
Dbl = bal 12-14 or any 18+ (a 2M overcall would be short suit takeout)
Pass by west = 4+ diamonds, no preference for a major
Pass by north = "I got more diamonds than joo."
Pass by south to 2 = nothing special to say. Dbl would be takeoutish for the minors.

Bid? (check pool for meanings of bids)

Looks like partner has both majors.
Maybe RHO has H & D? Is RHO's pass really "4+ diamonds, no preference for a major" and therefore equal length in the majors. That seems strange, because 2D opener does not need to know that? Is RHO's pass rather "4+ diamonds, no interest for the majors" (f.i. with a single or void in one of the majors?)

..This one is not clear for me.
- I would not pass
- I would not DBL for TO, partner will likely bid 4H (or did I already deny a 4cH by my previous pass).
It feels like we have points for game, but probably 5 minor is too much and only one stopper in 3NT (and that singleton H).
=> 3 (I'm afraid that this will be slow). I hope partner plays me for D (from the earlier pass) and C and that we don't miss a good game. (If partner corrects to 3D than I still try 3NT)

This hand was red flags waving everywhere.

As Timo pointed out in another thread, responder to multi doesn't have to bid 'honestly' with a weak hand and we can infer a weak hand.

I suspect that responder is so short in spades and long(ish) in hearts that he decided to assume opener had spades.

That allows us to infer that partner may well be 4=4 in the majors. If I had to guess, I'd give partner 12-14 hcp with 4=4=2=3 shape, and no spade values...opener is red v white at imps so will almost always hold AJxxxx.

I'd guess RHO to be something close to 1=5=4=3 or 1=5=5=2

I wouldn't bet a lot on these constructions.

I hate to pass out the opps in a 2 level contract when we hold about 25 hcp and stoppers in every suit, but where are we heading? What can we make?

Maybe 3N, if partner has the diamond K and RHO does have the stiff spade I am assuming, AND opener, who may have a good weak 2 at this heat, has no entry, but that seems too remote for me.

I pass. But with no strong convictions about any of this. Good problem.

3c

OPPS appear to have found a nice cozy place to play and even though
our side has the majority of power 3n looks terrible with our spade
holding and that same spade holding makes 5m look terrible. Best
overall is a simple 3c bid asking p to POC (since I have already shown
diamonds). I know this will be the hand where p has Jxx spades the dia
K is onside and 3n roles--at least we will probably get a positive score:)

Yes Nuno, this is a good problem as MikeH said.
I think I would bid 3 at the table, but I can easily imagine hands where pass is the winner and can be juicy too at these colors (+200 vs +100 at the other table for example for 7 imps)

Finally a problem when I don't pass although it is listed as an option (the only other was the one pass was not an option and I doubled when people instead insisted on trying to hit a moysan at the 4 level)

IMO double = 10, 3 = 9, 2N = 8, 3N = 7, Pass = 6
Partner almost certainly has the majors, so is likely to pass. On a bad day 2X might make, but players don't double enough in these kinds of auction.

I would bid 3N, with pass being close second choice.

I dont like double with a stiff heart, partner may well have something Jxx AQxxx xxx AQ and jump to 4. Besides I doubt he will ever pass with no spade card.

Thx all. Full hand:
2D = multi

I don't quite understand West's "no preference", but ok.

As mikeh, I sensed red flags all around, so I opted for a conservative 3, hoping that pard would put me back in diamonds with a preference there (which I would raise). His hand is somewhat unattractive, so he ended up not supporting the clubs. I probably would have bid 4 in his place because of the likely "spade ace to singleton". Definitely a minor suit game you'd want to be on, but this one requires some unlikely guesswork on clubs (defenders let me discard the heart loser though).

A difficult hand anyway, as anything you bid over 2 may turn out right or wrong. And indeed at the other table opps lingered in 3NT, -3 on a heart lead.

In the end I asked opps "why pass 2 with 4 diamonds if a 6-4 across is unlikely?". Back came "well, with 5 diamonds pard can redouble." I was left thinking who let the Rueful Rabbit out of its hole...

I think you'd better hide that E hand from mikeh, or he'll have a heart attack ;)
