IMPs, team match, decent opps and partner. You're celebrating a friend's first child soon to be born so everyone might be a little too exuberant.

Edit: EW play 2/1 vanilla

Well it's not there if they lead a minor, not much too exuberant, on a heart or spade lead you can unblock the hearts, ruff 2 hearts and get all the spades away.

I don't understand 3NT, and I really don't understand West bidding on after 3NT.

I think the problem was the 3 call. I would far prefer 4, which on this sequence would be clearly in support of diamonds.

As it was, I suspect that East felt she was going to find a dummy that looked more or less like xx KQxxx Kx AKxx, which makes for a decent grand even on a club lead. That was due, imo, to an entirely appropriate interpretation of the 3 call followed by a pull of 3N.

So I place the blame entirely on dummy

I've seen worse but I think the bidding went off track at 3h. The 3d bid
either showed doubt about 3n or slam interest and if it was doubt about 3n
the west hand definitely does not want to play there but 3h should show
something in hearts opener was unable to show yet like KQTxx at the least.
Note how even that much suit quality would have made the grand a much much
better one.

It was good to see west realize that after east bid 3n (this sequence showing doubt
about 3n) west continued on with 4d though I would have preferred 4c (cant possibly
be for suit purposes too easy to bid it after 2s) as a cue bid for diamonds. At least
the 4d bid keeps things going.

east not unreasonably took over and hoping for say xxx KQTxx Kx Axx or some such rocketed
to 7d. I see now mikeh posted a similar concept (sigh I was lazy and dint look first)

Hmm, if west's hearts were really KQxxx or better, can't she just jump to grand? Counting 6 diamonds, SA, 4 hearts, CAK.

edit: Oh poop never mind if they lead a club taking away the entry it's not very nice.

What do you imagine they'll lead on this auction?

Oh I agree, but the point I was trying to make was that it was not the world's most terrible spot with no chance whatever the defence did.

Any decent player will lead a trump then look at their hand although they come to grief when declarer has A10xxxxx and they lead their stiff.

It's unfortunate S didn't have KQ10x, as he might then lead one rather than a stiff trump.
