This may depend on what your agreement about X is in this sequence, for us, X=4, so 3 shows 5 intending to bid clubs next if partner doesn't support either of my suits.

I can live with 4 also and think this is the best bid otherwise. It's a tricky hand as slam is decent if either hand has J.

perhaps:

1c=p=1s=x
p=2h=3d=p
3nt=p=p=p

option2=
1c=p=1s=x
p=2h=3d=p
3nt=p=4d=p
5d

expect to miss slam very often.

I strongly prefer pass to 2. I don't think you can avoid 6 now.

why is west in such a hurry to rebid k9xxx? as it is, i would bid 4h on the east hand, expecting west to hold a 2c bid.

btw congratulations on your promotion from n/b, though i'm a little late.

Mike's sequence 1 is fine. Why did West bid 2C rather than pass? This shows a much better suit.

If I have to use the bidding as it proceeded...then I think I would choose 3h followed by 4d after west's 3nt call then we are on the way to 6d. But it would have been easier if east had started with 1d intending to reverse into spades on the second round of bidding....it does distort the hand pattern a little,but sets a game force at a lower level with the spade suit involved( usually)...also this will allow us to reach a 6d contract also...which is much better then 6c.

Exactly, in Acol you have to bid 2 over a pass, but the X gives you a free pass.

I think EW are playing 2/1.

That shouldn't matter as west still needs a real suit to rebid an unforced 2.

Sorry yes but irrelevant here, same applies (why opps system matters is unclear as they don't use it).

I am not an expert on 2/1 but the boundary must shift or at least it should. It would be inefficient if it didn't. If the original 1 is a wider range (including in terms of distribution), it must be more efficient to make both pass and 2 wider ranges than after a natural (4+) 1.

I agree with the hog* about the 2c bid but that does not
address the issue at hand....what to do over 2h. It seems
a GF

3d

Does the best job here allowing for a wide array of possible
contract depending on what openers hand looks like. I am never
happy bidding 3n with ATxx in the opps suit especially when it
seems p is short in that suit. Responder had a 3h bid available
if their hand only needed a heart stop for 3n and they did not
bid that. The bidding from there would proceed

1c (p) 1s (x)
2c* (2h) 3d p (no more opp bidding)
3h asking for a partial stop in hearts
4c has to be extra values since we bid 3d first instead of 3c
4d showing support
4h looking for slam but not strong enough to take over and letting
opener know you are short in hearts so the heart ace is not as valuable
a holding as say Jxx.

5c I hate to make this bid but if p has sufficient diamonds to go back
to diamonds then we should be fine else this may be our last playable spot.

pass or 5d favoring pass* since our club suit rates to be longer and stronger
opener continues to show a minimum and with no spade cue and the x behind us
makes the spade suit look scary and we know p has something in hearts for 3h bid.
