Hello Everyone,

In his book of take out double (which is very nice) mike have a chapter about delayed t.o doubles.
He give some rules about these doubles, some of them I'm not sure are best, what do you think is the meaning of double on the following two sequences:
1-P-1-P
2-Double

1-P-1-P
1NT-Double

I'm use to play both of them as takeout for spades (short spade suit was the reason i didn't double on the first round).
Mike agree with me on the second one(ok i agree with him is more suitable) but suggest playing the first one as penalty.

I agree with you rather than mike, but I haven't studied this position deeply.

I would rather play both as penalty or both as take-out of spades rather than play different meanings.

For me the double over 1nt is clubs. However, I would take the double over 2 as +.

Is Lawrence's argument is that on the first sequence we can bid a delayed 2 for takeout? That would make some sense, but it's not easy to remember this sort of difference, and the gain from playing penalty doubles is small. Low-level unilateral penalty doubles don't come up very often, and sometimes it just helps them to get to a better spot.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
