Matchpoints. Your call?
Kindly post the full hand so that we can see whose advice was the best.
Thank you.

Yes, because we'd all like to justify our bids based on the table result.

+130 was a poor matchpoint score, as +140 (even a couple of +170s) was available in spades, and apparently most Easts simply dialed it in with 2S after the overcall. It wasn't a total disaster though; those who opted to defend 1NT were disappointed since South was forced to make the desperation play of laying down the club ace.

So all in all I think 3♦ is not a bad spot, you just got unlucky.

I don't think diamonds play so well with a force either.

I'm bidding 3 ♦ to tell partner I have a big pointed suit 2 suiter. It'll give partner a really good picture of my hand - a powerful hand 5-5 or better. Whatever partner holds, partner will have a good handle on what to do.
P. S. - Even after seeing the full hand I think 3 ♦ is still right. It didn't work out on this particular hand, but if partner had a ♣ switched for a ♦, you'd be making 5.

Or if he had the ♠Q instead of the ♥Q, then 4♠ is very good.

We dont try to justify our underbid by playing the hand poorly either, Phil.
Are you sure diamonds dont play good on a force defense even if they lead A from AJxxx ? Or did you mean making 2 overtricks is not good ?

After we X, West pulls to 2♥ and I guess we bid 3♦ now for the same end result.

IMO 2N = 10, 3♦ = 8, Double = 6
Double shows strength but may work badly with a such a shapely hand.
A suit bid shows shape but doesn't promise strength.
A 2N overcall is the traditional way to show both shape and power.
