Well, there is some danger that partner can't balance either and we will defend 2 making when we could make 3. It's not like partner is going to learn anything substantial from opener's pass.

Perhaps this would have been a better matchpoint problem.

To first part, if you can make 3 you will be in 4.

To second part, seriously?

Obviously there are significant risks to taking a non-pass call, but if we pass, won't partner frequently have a weak notrump hand and pass this auction out? Is defending 2 really our best spot in such a case?

If you don't have enough to act then you don't have enough. You can make all the same arguments if it goes 2 opening on your right, or 1 p 3 natural and weak to you. But none of that is a particularly good reason to act on a clearly inadequate hand.

You wouldn't bid NV over a 2 opening on your right either? (assume partner isn't a passed hand, which is is sort of not here).

It's very risky, but this is very likely to get passed our, so I think you should bid. Certainly at MPs.

3. With trepidation.

Trepidation isn't the adjective that I would use...

Unsurprisingly, overcalling works out poorly:

Scoring: IMP

EW can take 4 down four on good defense. They have to double to win more than 1 IMP, however, as South will likely lead diamonds against a spade contract.

It's interesting to note that if West opens a Precision 1, 4x will be a very likely contract for N-S.

I am curious - who is going to double 4, East or West?

I'm not sure what your hand proves. Give East a 6331 or 7321 and West one more red card, and you are making 4H with 2S only one off.

But then give East a top spade honour, and that ain't true any more.

No, and the very thought of doing so makes me shudder.

I don't think it proves anything.

East can (to get a club lead) and did at the other table.
