I think this hasn't been discussed in detail yet.

Any directors have any general rules on when they sub people, and what type of subs they look for? Do you try to pair players who request WJ2000 with others of the same?

Another thing is, what happens when a contract is a sure make, or sure set, and a sub enters and proceeds to mess everything up, through no fault of his/her. Would you adjust score?

I always feel that if you enter tourney together with somebody, then each of you is responsible for the other, so if your partner has a bad connection and disappears, then the onus should be on you, the remaining partner to look for a sub. ie, line up your friends or whatever. What do you think?

I sub after 3 minutes in unclocked. Sub after 2 minutes in clocked or if a player is red.

As for which sub, I guess it depends on how 'serious' the tourney is. And is always limited by time. On a bad day in a big tourney you take any face that comes along.

Score/play: adjustments might be made as time permits. I have also told a defender/declarer what to play or what has been played.

Something I wish I could bring myself to do, but never do is tell declarer how many tricks to claim when the round is almost over. Eg, you can see declarer will make 10 tricks, maybe 11 on bad defence. It is easier to say CLAIM 10, then to go back and adjust the score later.

I don't think that is is a good idea to have the surviving player find a substitute for his missing partner: he could ask candidates, but could not hear their answers. And he cannot access the substitutes list.

I'm often in the minority but here are my policies:
1) I assign a result when one is clear.
2) I try to match up players with someone who plays the
same system if possible.
3) I do not expect someone who comes in late in a hand
to continue play of the hand. If the entire play of the hand
thus far cannot be reviewed in time then I assign a score if
one is clear or do my best to make a fair adjustment.

Dr. Todd raises an interesting point in discussing adjusting scores. This was a fierce point of contention between him and misho a while back.

The rules for score adjustment during online bridge might need to be revisited. As a director for the abalucy club, we are currently allowing adjustments to correct for obvious errors. Misclaims, etc. Everyone (so far) seems to be very acceptable of this appoach. And adjustments when a new player joins the table mid-hand surely seems reasonable, at least to me, as that is the hardest condition to get balanced any other way.

Now, bridge is a timed event, and as a director I am frequently too busy to go adjust every round when someone doesn't finish the board. That is the area without a real good solution. The average minus all around without other evidence still seems good solution to me. (Evidence can be presented for otherwise... I claimed once with 3 minutes to go and opponents refused, repeatedly to accept once, so time ran out... when the claim was just too obvious, that a correction was mandatory, and censure required).

I host online tournaments for 3 years now and I think very big help if you familar with people who play in you tournaments on regular basis. Then when you need sub you good idea who is good fit... ie intermediate to intermediate, etc. While expert player is expert in bridge they maybe no good fit for inexperience player and yes "lessor" players do enjoy tournament. tee hee

However,... :-( current sub list is little bit ackward and this do not allow td to see profile :-( sigh... and other threads mention problem of disappearing sub list - and what happen to chat if you do not close this window. (chat do not work on click - you must click "chat" to send.

Good director is shepard to flock of players - our job is entertainment to quote great wp host Elivis. Our players come to play and to ask players to find subs is no very good for nice smooth flow of tournament. our ability to substitute is very very nice

The Enter-to-send-chat bug manifests when there is another BBO window open ( for instance, the list of subs ). This has been fixed for 3.5.2

We've setup 3.5.2 so that players can look at the sub list as well. Too much work to display full profile, but we display country and level for each possible sub ( and subs must now register for each tourney they are interested in).

One thing a player can do is select his own sub from the list. This only works if partner is red and if the sub accepts the invitation that this generates. Of course, the director can do the same thing, except that *her* sub list shows missing players as well as subs . In theory, the director will be able to select a mising player in a list, select a sub in the same list, and click OK - and the replacement will be performed if the sub accepts.

Finally, a player (or a director) can ask for a replacement for a player ( in the case of a player, his partner must be red) without specifying the replacement. Here, the server will query the first available sub and if no subs are available will ask the lobby for subs.

As you can guess, all this is gearing up for automated tourneys, but i think some of this will take away the most annoying part of directing (at least for me, subbing is the most annoying part of directing0

[glow=red,2,300]hmmm... I think this is little bit dangerous for what if replacement player is watching table in tournamemt? [/glow] :'(This give sub perfect knowledge of cards maybe. I no idea if other directors do this but I do not use replacement players who is watching tables.

Same problem for this autoplacement - If computer ignores people who is kibitzing then this is very nice feature however this do remove td ability to sub - what is time period computer wait prior to subbing? if it is last board in match and clocked event 2-3 min delay is disaster.
