What shape hand does partner have? If he's 4-4-1-4, pass may work out better. After all, I do have a defensive trick to offer. To offset this, the opps surely have an 8 or 9 card fit. If my partner is 4405, 4 clubs is the best bid. If 4423, I think it's pass. Opponents often get overly frisky when NV, and +100 is looking pretty good and +300 isn't out of the realm of possible. Still, some missing high cards are going to be with my RHO and well situated for finesses. This sucks. Can I feign illness and find a substitute? Partner has a good hand and acted under pressure. I don't want to punish him so I'll bid my length and hope for the best.

4C.

I'm passing these hands. It's controversial, but I think there are very real risks to bidding, enough to offset the risks of passing. Partner may well have a big hand and bid again if we fail to pass. And if partner does not have a big hand, the scary RHO might hang us anyway. Yes, 3♦X is game, but they haven't made it yet.
