IMP N vs. V. 1st seat

I was discussing the opening bid with our team mates tonight, playing 2/1
I think I know what one expert would say.
“It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.”
Bridge should be fun!

Hi,

if you think, the hand is worth a reverse, you bid 1D, if you think it is not, you bid 1H.

I would go with 1D.

With kind regards

Surprisingly bidding your suits in order of length works out

Not ideal and I think that at mps 1H would usually work out, but I shudder to contemplate opening 1H at imps…or in an unusually strong mp field. Club pairs are generally hopeless at finding good high level minor suit contracts, so I’d not be too worried about other pairs handling this hand better than my pair would, after 1H. But at imps, where I don’t give a damn about any ‘field’…I just want to bid as accurately as possible and I think this is just enough for 1D then, if appropriate, biddng hearts twice. I’d obviously prefer one or both my black suit values to be in a red suit, but I’m persuaded by the red suit texture that that 1D will, more often than not, lead to a better auction than would 1H. But I understand 1H…I just don’t like it much.

I open 1D as partner with as little as Kxxx of diamonds and a doubleton heart with the finesse onside makes game. However, opps spades onslaught will be problematic but I can't help that. All I can do is bid my hand as best I can and let the chips fall where they may.
