MP
This hand generated a lot of discussion.

Bridge should be fun!

P

I don't mind preempts with a five card suit, however an eight card suit looks risky

Seems I am still a bit junior. 5D now rather than after opps exchanged info.

EDIT - had not realized we were 2nd hand, my reasoning was will I let opps in 4H, not really, would S play better than D when partner has 4-5 of them; not necessarily (although we would be 1 level lower).

Now there is a risk we could have 6S that will become unfindable after 5D. Or that opps only have a partial and 4D is enough. Or that H are 5440 and partner just Xes them for 300.

But I am not opening 1D with virtually no defense.

Given it is MP, 5D is still a possible call and I would likely go for it but passing can definitely be considered.

Do you like to make the opps make the last guess or are you happy having that guess?

It’s possible any of 1D, 5D, 3N, 1D or P could work (3N being gambling..so I’m missing the queen, I do have 8…or a 4 level minor suit preempt.

But my experience is that the best way to do well, in the long run, in today’s game is to apply maximal pressure. Let’s see them find 4H or 5C over 5D. The spade suit is mostly an illusion. Partner would usually need 5+ spades for spades to outscore diamonds and we can’t investigate spades in most foreseeable auctions. What do they call an eight card suit? Trump.

Not sure? Ask yourself this…can you see a plausible sequence, whatever you open below 5D, in which you’re faced with a bid or defend decision over a club or heart contract? Imo that outweighs any risks associated with 5D.

I feel the fact that RHO has passed changes the odds of me having to make that sort of decision. I agree with what you say in first seat but not second, 1♦ for me.

#1 what do you call an 8 card suit?
#2 7-4 hands should be treated as single suited

3 possibilities
a) 5♦ - maybe preempting partner and a touch overcooked with RHO passing
b) 3N 4-level non-solid preempt (3♠ being a solid minor)
c) 1♦ being able to show 4x6x on the next round.
