I doubled on the basis that I have less than 10 points but do want to compete.
My LH opponent bids 3C.
Partner bid 3D.
I bid 3S.
Partner bid 4H.
I regularly mess up hands with a long suit like this and would appreciate guidance on how I should have bid.

X then ♠ would suggest something stronger so I'm tempted by a direct 4♠

I disagree. An immediate 2s bid should be game inv at least. X followed by 2s is how you show a 7-9 pt hand with 6+ cards in the suit. I think you bid it correctly. Partner's 3d bid should show a good hand...and they do have that. 4h is probably a bit of a stretch, but holding weak support for partner and a 7 card suit, I'd put it into 4s. Generally, hands play better in the weak hand's suit. The weak hand will generate tricks in their long suit if played in spades, but may be completely useless when played in one of the strong hands suits. The time this is incorrect, is when the strong hand is the equivalent of a 2c opener.
