This is the World Series. How can it not be big news Down Under? :)

There is a baseball field in the local park, but it's not really a thing here. We play cricket, which is designed to be incomprehensible to anyone who hasn't grown up with it, as well as a few other sports not played in many places.

To be fair, there was a small headline about the first finals match in the online paper, but it's disappeared now. For some reason I can find out all about day 2 of the cricket test between Bangladesh and England though.

Interestingly enough, there is a claim that the World Series was actually named after Pulitzer's New York World (a newspaper).

First, congratulations to the Cubs and all of their fans.

But we mull over culture and philosophy stuff on the WC, and I have been mulling.

In the Post this morning there was an article about long time Cubs fans who died just a little before this, and it spoke of many who had such allegiance to Wrigley Field.. So some questions.
Is Wrigley the oldest ball park still in use?
How much of a factor is this continuity of location in explaining the long term loyalty of fans?

Tom Waits has a song featuring a old man, I always picture him on a bar stool, singing "I seen the Brooklyn Dodgers play in Ebbets Field...". The Dodgers went to LA a long time ago and Ebbets Field is no more.. Well, I seen the Saint Paul Saints (AAA team owned by the Dodgers) play in University Park (off University Ave) . Seen the Minneapolis Millers too (Giants farm team, Nicollet Park). Now the Twin Cities have the Twins, and they are on what, their third stadium?

I don't want to make too much of this, but not too little either. Baseball brings out various human traits, and a longing for continuity is a very human trait.

Ok, now I will have a second cup of coffee and reflect on the ***** election. Or maybe not.

I think it was John Cleese who said: In England when we host a World Championship, we tend to invite other countries.

They do, they do. And the other country made it almost all the way (and has in the past).

At the DC NABC, I threatened to go to the ball game wearing the correct ballcap. Grumble.

Go Nordiques, I guess?

No, Fenway Park is 2 years older. The next one is Dodger Stadium in LA, from 1962.

I doubt that the stadium has that much to do with fan loyalty. Chicago sports fans are generally very enthusiastic -- the Bears have a very big following, too.

And the new Yankee Stadium is only 7 years old, I don't think it has dampened their fans' loyalty.

Yeah, well you get to cheat. You get 4 countries for the price of one!
