say you open 1♦ with 14-16 balanced. This means 1♦ opening can only be unbalanced long diamonds or 14-16 bal.

What would you bid on this sequences:

1♦-pass-1♥-pass

Holding 4♠

1♦-1♠-double-pass

Holding 4♥, what to do with unbalanced then?

On the first one I bid 1n. If I open unbalanced ten counts I can't expect p to invite with a ten count unless I show my values. Besides, balanced could also be 4225 so if 1s is nebulous we won't find a diamond fit so easily.

On the second one I suppose 2s or 3h with 16 or a good 15 but otherwise my extra points are offset by my lack of shape.

Not sure I see what the point is. Why not bidding 1NT with 14-16 and 2/3 of the major with unbal min/max?

I assume you mean 11-13 balanced for opening 1♦.

Depending on your style of Precision 1♥ could be very light if you run with short ♦. So bidding 1♠ caters to finding cheapest playable fit even if a 4-3.

If p bid 1N you can still rebid a 6-card ♦.

No. 11-13 would open 1nt.

We open 1♦ with 14-16 balanced, or unbalanced long in either minor. This frees up the 2♣ opener for more nefarious purposes.

1♦ (P) 1♥ for us shows 4+♠. We occasionally miss a 4-4♥ fit when we are weak, but then opponents often miss their ♠ fit, and we pick up some 3-5♠ fits. We seem to come out ahead.

1♦ (P) 1♠ is an enquiry: opener bids 1NT with 14-16 bal or 2m if weak, 2M with 4M5+m max, or 3m.

1♦ (1♠) X is an enquiry same as above. With 4♥ we respond 2♥ only with unbalanced max.

I've played this style for a looooong time in a top level partnership. In retrospect I came to dislike it because its excessively nebulous nature led to partscore mayhem.

But anyway, I am curious as to how you bid hearts. My best scheme was this:

1♦ ..??
1♥ = enquiry, but can be 0+H if 4 hearts.
1♠ = nat F1.
1NT = 4-4 majors, 0-9 H, NF.
2♣ = 5 hearts (or 6 bad ones), 0-9 H, NF.
2♦ = 5 hearts + 4 spades, 0-9 H, NF.
2♥ = 6 hearts, 0-9, NF.

This actually worked well. But if 2nd seat disrupts it, we'd be quite in the dark lol.

After 1♦...
1♥ = 4+♠, enquiry
1♠ = enquiry
1NT = weak with long ♣, or inv+ with ♠
2♣ = weak with long ♦, or inv+ with ♣
2♦ = weak with long ♥,or inv+ with ♦
2♥ = weak with long ♠, or inv+ with ♥
2♠ = art GF inquiry, usually with slam interest
2NT = 12-13 bal

After missing a couple of ♥ contracts in quick succession we spent some time on working through how to handle the majors, but if both hands are weak we can still miss a 4-4 fit.

After 1♦ - 1♥/♠ ... if partner rebids 1NT it's systems on so we can find any fit; if he rebids 2m then 2♥ shows 5♥ with a weak invite; a better hand with 5♥ +4♠ we can show with the impossible sequence 1♦-1♠-2m-2♠, with other shapes we can respond 2♥ and rebid 2NT or a suit.

I meant to add that while interference at the 2-level or higher is awkward, it's also rare ... we might be hold a strong NT and can double them ... or they may be reluctant to bid a minor until we have clarified our holding. We open over 13% of all hands 1♦ and feel that is causes the opps far more problems than it causes us.
