1♦ - 1♠
2♣ - 2♥*
3♦

*Fourth suit forcing

3♦ apparently shows extras. Why?

The sequence A - B - A is stronger than the sequence A - A - B when they show the same distribution. The reason is that a preference to B has to be at a higher level.

Not convinced. I agree in principle where a player voluntarily patterns out in this fashion when not placed under duress. But in this case at the time of bidding 2C opener has no reason to expect to be forced to bid again. Are you suggesting that with 5-4 shape but no extras then opener should rebid 2D rather than 2C just in case responder forces him to bid again?
Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

But we're already in a game force...

Art is correct. There was no game force in place when responder bid 1S. Opener should rebid 2C with 6-4 and extras and 2D with the same shape and minimum values. With 5-4, surely opener always rebids 2C. If responder continues with the 4th suit, opener is truly fixed only with 1354 and no H stopper. Usually I'd bid 2NT and hope for the best.
