Back from 2 days at the Lynnwood Regional. Fun hands, mixed results with the best being a 61% game, picked up 2 great (BBO) partners from the partnership desk.
Here is my favorite hand, it is still making me smile.

Partner tanked and then redoubled, what is your call now?

Good point! Doesn't everyone play 1430 :D

OK. 7 seems reasonable now. 7NT may make. But partner may be basing part of his 4 bid on shortness in a pointed suit, or you may need to establish the heart suit, so 7 should be good enough.

Query: Why didn't you redouble over 5x?

Query: I am assuming that 4NT is RKCB in hearts. Why do you know that you want to play in hearts? I would not be surprised if partner had only 4 hearts.

This whole auction has me thoroughly confused, but it seems we want to be in 7.

You're assuming that this double is a void, but it can't be. Since the weak 2 bidder is on lead (against a presumable heart contract) the double is him telling himself what to lead. If he was void then he'd know that he couldn't honor his own lead director, so he must have at least one club.

You're assuming that RHO is aware of what is going on.

Either he is simply throwing in a random psyche (maybe he's read too many hands featuring Zia) or he thinks he has defence to clubs or he forgot he was on lead or he just didn't care that he wasn't...he wanted to make sure that IF his partner was on lead, he'd get a ruff (forgetting that you can't ruff the trump suit).

I vote for one of the latter as far more likely than either of the former.

However, partner has club length such that LHO can't have a trick. I'd place partner with 5 clubs and probably only 4 hearts (tho 5 is possible).

Will I redouble? Not if LHO doubles :P But he won't

What does XX tell partner? This is our 20th hand we've played together.

I don't want to play in hearts, I'm asking for keycards and will then set the contract.

After 5, I stopped thinking and doubled for +1100, I think tied for top as it seemed that no one bid the grand.

The vulnerability was wrong sorry - EW were vulnerable

Talking after the hand, we were joking that I could have announced the XX as a SOS double thereby tempting RHO to pass and allowing partner to play in 5xx

I like the XX to be "hey, partner, I like 5 rewound, what do you think?" It happened a month ago, when I wasn't sure that we weren't off the trump ace and a needed side-suit king (auction got cramped); and if we were, +800 was going to be a great score. Turned out we weren't, and +1000 won 1 IMP (into the 6 we were heading for). Call me old-fashioned.

And therefore, I would have XX 5. What I would have done over 5, I don't know. Probably pass.

It says that they made a big mistake, and I can make this contract, perhaps with overtricks.

I have never played any form of RKCB where you could ask for keycards in one suit and then play in another suit. If you were planning to set the contract in NT, that is another thing, but that seems highly unlikely.

Of course, if you have some special agreement that you can make a keycard ask in one suit and then play in another suit, that is fine. But, as you said, this was your 20th hand together, so I doubt that you have any such special agreement.
