Haven't played for a while, using the windows client.
Had a toughish defensive problem. Up popped a message telling me to play.
I didn't, found myself back in the lobby.

How long has this been going on?
How can the table server stop it?

There are a few players who are very impatient. Usually I find that, if I have maintained a reasonable tempo generally, they will tolerate a little thinking here and there. Even so, once in a while a host is just in such a mad rush that they can't stand even that. Nothing really can be done about it, mark them as enemy and go on. Or I suppose you could only host tables yourself.

It may help to respond to their first prompt though - just to let them know you haven't abandoned.

edit: I didn't realize this booting was automated!

The table host can put +slow+ in the table description which triples your thinking time. You can also chat to the table or, I believe, even just move your mouse when focused on the BBO window to reset the clock.

I don't work for BBO and any advice is based on my BBO experience over the decades

What Paul says, or have the host lock seats at the table. There's no auto-removal at tables that require permission to sit.

We tested this feature for a few weeks in the fall, made some changes based on user feedback, and re-enabled it about 4 weeks ago. The announcement is here.
