Try as I may, I can't get the defense to 5 tricks .
As long as the split 3-3 and Declarer keeps leading them, the 9th trick will be dummy's 4th .

[ (Declarer ) Ducking the opening lead seems like a "compression play" -- compressing 2 tricks into 1 ].

That's true, but it leads to a forced end play. Club ducked, club returned (otherwise we keep an entry), heart hook, diamond (must duck), heart finesse, heart AK diamond. West must win and can cash a long heart but gives us entry to the diamonds.
Hi y'all!

It seems to me you can always end-play West to provide you with an entry to hand.

T1: A assuming East splits. Otherwise we establish diamonds immediately.
T2: heart finesse.
T3: diamond to hand
T4: heart finesse
T5,6: cash hearts discarding diamonds.
T7: club to East to extract West exit card.

Now what can East do? If East plays a diamond, West is end-played to provide us with an entry to hand.
If East returns a black suit, we will play a diamond after cashing the third club in dummy when we regain the lead to endplay West.
Your first 3 discards from hand must be diamonds. What our fourth discard is on the Q depends on what West discarded on the third club.
If West discarded a diamond we do likewise, if a spade we do as well.
The defense gets a trick in each suit.
You make 4 hearts, 2 clubs, one diamond and one spade and at least one other trick in diamonds or spade.

This would have been a good single dummy problem. What is much tougher is to realize as declarer in time that the hand can not be made unless West has both aces and the queen of hearts.

Lucky Clubs are 2-6 and thus dis-entried.
What plan works if Clubs are 3-5?

No line can work then since you will have to give up the lead to both the diamond ace and the spade ace and the defense has communication in clubs.
