So, my dislike of opening this hand was accidentally a good thing. Or, maybe it is just "resulting"....based on years of results.

Play 1m-2M as 6M invitational and you won't have guessing problems.
And partner guesses the diamond fit?

*with kenrexford voice*: 3S should be a fit jump showing 6 spades and a diamond fit right?
I would probably just bid 4D assuming 3H is invitational and natural and not a splinter. I do not think 3S should be what I said since I might bid 7-4 in the majors like that with bad spades and good hearts but it's an interesting thought.

Good voice, but do you really want that in your head?
That said, I think 3♠ has to be right on this hand. With 7♠/4♥ and garbage spades, the hand you are concerned about, why not just 2♠ (P-1♦-1♠-2♦-2♠)? With what hand are you not oipening 1♠ but now insistingt on your suit when partner rebids his own? If that hand might possibly exist, play 2♠ making 4♠ once in a blue-friggin'-moon but have no problem with this much more common problem. That is, if you do not open 2♠ with this hand.
For me, though, I would normally make a flower bid as others do (P-1♦-2♠), usually a 5-piece in spades.

And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Yes, but 4D shows a much better hand than 3D, so you risk missing game in general by bidding 3D instead of 4D.
I use 3d as a means of telling p I am near max for my passed hand
with the hopes we can reach 3n or higher. I use 4d as primarily
a preemptive raise with the idea that if we are making anything
it is probably 5d (or more in a suit somewhere)--I use 3d (while
wishing I could bid something else) as a stronger (hcp wise) hand
than 4d (it may or may not be less distributional than 4d).

Most people who plays 1m-2M invitational, including me, still plays it fit+natural by passed hand and/or in competition.
