Matchpoints.

1) Agree with passing the double?

2) What's going on?

I'd guess LHO has a 3-card limit raise and partner has 7204 or 7240 (maybe a stiff heart and a 5-carder on the side, but that hand probably just bids 4 the first time).

Facing those hands, we're off two hearts and either two diamonds, or two clubs and a club ruff. I would pass the double and lead the A, taking 4Hx-1. I think a club lead is too risky, although if right it might lead to down two.

There is a typo in the auction - surely I raised my partner with KJ9 support immediately?

And having not done so, partner has given me another chance by saying he would like us to bid on unless I have the contract off in my own hand. I don't, so I bid 4.

Honestly I think this is just a lightner double.

Lets say there's been absolutely no discussion about this situation at all. Would you assume playing with a reasonable player that lightner doubles were standard in this kind of situation?

This can be either:

1. Max 3S overcall and some side values, OR
2. Lightner from a very optimistic partner

One can wonder why pard didn't bid 4S the first place with hand 1. Or how did he guess we got some cards with hand 2.

Since neither 1 or 2 make much sense, I'm going to play this double as "do something clever". That would be 4S.

4, lol.
Partner has some nice hand with extras but want to make sure we don't have QJT9 of trump before competing.

Even if he is void in clubs I fail to see why he should think we are defeating 4 with his what is supposedly not very strong distributional hand with a lot of spades in it.

I have seen this type of bidding from some se european
players---the 3s bid is a strong hand vs preemtive
something like 16 and at least 5 spades.

KJTxx void Axxx AKxx or some such concoction
the x of 4h merely says they think they will
beat 4h.

Bid 4s.

Assuming 3 was weak, I think this type of double is Lightner showing a void somewhere, and no discussion is required. Partner doesn't have to hold any outside defence for this, because he knows that I have some values - opener didn't act over 3, and responder presumably has only an invitational hand. As with all Lightner doubles, the increased chance of beating it justifies the risk that they'll make it. Q10xxxxx xx Qxxx - would be a reasonable hand for this action.

I don't like the "I want to bid 4" interpretation. If he had such an offensive hand, he should have bid 4 in the first place instead of letting them exchange information like this.

Having said that, I don't care what this double is. I'm bidding 4, as I would have done on the previous round.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Surely this is an action double?

Those of you that gave partner an opening hand, how many hcp are there in the deck?

I guess partner could have Andys hand with two queens, but isn't that hand afraid that the extra ruff from the dbl just holding down the uptrick?

If the double is indeed Lighner and we assume 7420 or 7402 with the SA isnt passing clear? They might make it, but we arent playing imps so frequency dominates.

Btw i agree with passing 3s.
