Matchpoints. Competent opponents. All Vul. You are in 3rd seat.

You may or may not agree with the 2NT call. But that is not the issue.

What action do you take over 4♠x?

2NT opposite a passed hand is fine. I'll pull if pard is trigger-happy or pass otherwise.

Can't bid.....to do so would be either to overrule partner or to try to escape from a bad call made the first round.

if you think that 2N is appropriate....and I don't.....bidding 2N on this hand simply helps the opps far more than it will help partner....then partner should have them beat, unlikely as it seems.

if, like me, you think 2N was a silly bid, then you still have to pass, because the only action more destructive of partnership confidence than making the initial bad bid is to compound the situation by trying to rescue yourself and going -800 against their 790 or 1100 against their 990.

You probably have a zero coming....you almost certainly deserve your zero.....don't make matters worse, in partnership terms...just say sorry, at the end (or grin sheepishly) and move on.

I don't see how -500 is possible, btw....surely partner had a bid over 3♠ on any hand where 500 is possible?

2NT is completely sick. Sorry but it is. I guess I pass. Who knows? 4N might well be the winning bid, getting -800 instead of -1190. I expect partner will kill me no matter what I do now, so partnership confidence is not my #1 priority right now.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Assuming competent defense, pulling to 5♣ results in -800 instead of -990.

Pass. Presumably your partner knows more about your hand than you do about his.

If partner wanted to save, he could bid 5♣, then decide what to do when they crack it.

Then both you and partner screwed up. It's one thing to play partner for a trick for his vulnerable 2N: it's another thing entirely to play him for 2 tricks!

Btw, was there a significant mp difference between 800 and 990? If not, then bidding is wrong anyway.....a zero is a zero, while should they go down, and you pulled, your top became a zero. Not good odds, to say nothing about partnership dynamics.

No difference whatsoever.

A number of players bid 2NT on my hand. Only my partner found a double of 4♠. His hand was:

Txxx Kxxxx xx AK

Both clubs cashed and that held it to 5.

I am assuming the opps will not permit me to ruff a diamond in dummy if I play in 5♣x. If they don't play a trump on winning the diamonds (if not earlier), then I could escape for -500, as diamonds were 3-3.

That was a reckless dbl by pard. Has he never heard of a 2NT overcall opposite passed pard?

Another vote for pass the first round. That is far more important than this problem, which is a clear pass.
