If you ask you will find out that 2♠ should be four spades or three with a singleton on the side. However at MPs maybe they bid this way with some balanced hand hoping that a 4-3 spade fit will score better than a 5-2 minor fit.

Apart from double being for takeout, our opps are nonvul and we have no trump tricks.

For penalty. I assume My partner has opened 1 nt showing 12-14 hcp and a balanced hand.I have 2 quick tricks 1 slow trick 4 trumps 10 hcp.I do not have a game but i am expecting contract to go down.
Could you please explain to an intermediate player (who masquerades as advanced on bbo) whats wrong with penalty double?

the problem with the agreement is that often when you open 12-14 both sides can make some partscore and it is better to cater to that with takeout doubles.

penalty doubles seem to cater to positions whereupon one side cannot make game and the other side cannot make a partscore. I don't like to cater to these positions.
