What if a player, being in last round at table 1, aks not to sub his partner and the opp ask to sub since they like to play for first place?

Theoretically it is possible that for that player non play is without risk to lose first position..

(Reminder: A td can never give less than AV- on a started board and if less than 4 minutes left a board, in this case the last board - if a round has 2 boards, will not count if in imps...)

Would u sub and if yes, when? And if not, what do you say to the opp?

I do not believe a player has the right to refuse to play.

We are here to play bridge the first priority should be to get a normal bridge result.

If the director needs to appoint a substitute for the smooth running of the tourney then that is the directors prerogative. If the player refuses then he does not deserve as much as an average minus.

I believe any player has the right to finish the tourney with the same player s/he started, despite bad connections.

His choices are, get a sub (partner can't be back then), or get a string of bad results (Ave-, not worse, they problem is technical, and should not get a procedural penalty for exercizing a right). Opps meanwhile get Ave+, so not a problem.

If you sub my p without asking me, then put my p back when available again.

That's what I do, both as a player and as (rare, now) director (NO sub without PARTNER's request, Ave+/Ave- given meanwhile).

Mirjam: Choose the view which suits you better (Wayne's, mine's, others) and stick with it. Any framework is good as long as it treats all equally.

It appears Wayne's and mine's are mutually exclusives. I'd gladly play in his tourneys (and take the sub, and bug him to put my p back ;) )

If you are the Director, the game is yours to manage. I am also of the mind that we are here to play, not to hold out for an artificial Average score of some kind. I would wait a reasonable period of time and then sub. This is fair and reasonable. Winning a round of bridge is terrific, but on the graph of life, it's not a major plot.

I think that the TD/Host should have pretty much complete autonomy on all matters of policy, including specifying the rights of a player to actively seek and/or accept a forced sub. However, I also think that:

1) In the absence of a published policy in the conditions of contest, there should be a "default" policy set by the site rules (perhaps there is, I have not looked).

2) In the event of any departure from that default published policy (and in the event of there not being a default published policy) then the policy of the tournament should be clearly stated in the conditions of contest.

Hi Mirjam!

Since this is the last round, i would add a few extra minutes, giving the chance to come back.

I would do that, because:

1) Any player who's at table 1 in a swiss movement deserves to see his/her name on the result

2) subbing in at the last board is no fun 4 the sub

If the player does not come back lets say within 2 minutes i'd sub anyway

Have a nice day

A lot of rules are already being imposed. Just because they are not published in advance, vary at random between tourneys, and applied arbitrarily with retrospective effect, does not mean that the rules do not exist.

I am not suggesting more rules than are already being applied - only their publication.
