Scoring: MP

P 1 2 P
P 2 P ?

Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.

With the given start you have a clear pass.

Since it's my style not to offer a minor over a minor, I would have considered bidding 1 over 1 intending to pass 1NT and 2 rebids and bidding 1NT over 1. But this is definitely not standard.

HotShot, it was RHO who bid 2. You had a trap pass and now you can pass. Or maybe bid 2NT or 3 but I am not sure which is least revolting.

If RHO had passed, 1 would have been very standard :)

Pass. Would like to see RHO's overcall though.

down 1, 42% MPs.

Top scores were 3NTS=, and 2CE-4.

I really, really thought we were going to get 2CEX-3 at least.

In that auction:
P 1D 2C P
P 2D P 2H

is the standard meaning of 2H "weak hand with long hearts" or "busted penalty pass probe for 3NT"? It seems like the penalty pass hand should cue-bid or just bid NT.

Good question. These penalty passes are difficult IMO.
I would guess (see the ??? :P ):
- 2D=11-19 ; Not 4=3 in Majors (should DBL with 4/3=5=1)
- 2H= 6-9, 5-card (4-card???). With weaker hand you pass 2D.
- 3H iso 2H. Forcing (4cH and had a penalty pass of 2C)???

I would bid on the given auction.

Partner needs something to be offering 2 opposite a PASS and could be considerably better than a normal weak 2 rebid had I bid.

My choices are 2NT or 3. I don't like either much. If 3 would be interpreted as forcing to game then I only have 2NT.

I hate opener's 2 rebid. Only a five-card suit and the normal shape for a takeout double. With only 11 HCP I don't care too much for the takeout double especially given the values are soft. I like PASS.

Disregarding the silliness of bidding 2 on the actual hand, the problem is there are two possible hand types for the 2 bidder:

1) He didn't double because he is (sub) minimum and/or has a club void, eg Kxxx Qxx AQJxxx - or Kxx xxx AQJxxxx x. In that case 2 is enough.

2) He didn't double because he can't tolerate a heart response, eg AQxx Ax KJTxxx x

Obviously 3NT is pretty good opposite the second hand and it's not clear what that hand is supposed to do after doubling and hearing 2. But you do need this hand type to have Ax in hearts and a club to be sure of making 3NT, though it may also be ok without ace of hearts if they don't lead one. With a better hand than my example I think I would double and bid 2 over 2.

Since partner could have either and 2 will often be sufficient even on the second type, I think pass is probably correct.

I think passing as opener after the 2 intervention is even more inane than bidding 2, but double is clearly better than both.

agree with maggieb. you should give the phone number to your partner.
