In standard treatments, which of these cuebids guarantees support for partner's suit?

1. 1 - (2) - 3

2. 1 - (2) - 2 - (p) - 3

3. (1) - 1 - (p) - 2

Although it is likely I'm not sure that any of these guarantee support. Your partner could have a general game forcing hand and will set the contract later.

Hand #1 and # 3 .
Cuebid by Responder or Advancer is support for partner's suit.

In #2 , Opener's cue is a general force and does not promise support.

By the same token, when Overcaller makes a cue, it too is a general force and does not promise support for Advancer:
4. ( 1 ) - 1 - ( p ) - 2
     ( p ) - 2!

That is my take on what is "standard":
Responder and Advancer cues are support;
Opener and Overcaller cues are not ( necessarily ).

The first sequence shows support. If you didn't have support you could bid a new suit which would be forcing.

The second sequence does not show support. Partner's bid was only a one round force, and so a simple rebid would not be forcing. Because of this we need to be able to use the cuebid to show a hand with extra strength but no clear direction, without bypassing 3NT.

The third sequence does not show support. A change of suit by advancer at the two level is not absolutely forcing, and so you need to cuebid to create a force, whether or not you have support for partner.

1) Direct raises definitely contains support. If you had both majors or a single major (not enough for a 2M bid) you would make a negative double. This direct cue should always contain support regardless if you're the opening/responding side or the overcalling/advancing side.

2) This may or may not have support, whatever it is, it is GF. Look at it another way, opener may have a self suited diamonds or maybe 18-19 balanced with no club stopper. This should be easily clarified after responder's rebid.

3) I think this one depends if your 2/1 after an overcall is forcing or not, and what 2NT here means. But I would say most of the time it will have support but if not, it will be a good hand mostly balanced/strain finder. If your 2/1's after an overcall is NF then 2 definitely does not promise support as it could contain a self GF hand or something.

#1 if you dont have support, you have other options like a neg. X
#2 if min for the call, one has support, te difference to 1 is, you dont
have a neg. X available
#3 no, this is a classical stopper ask
