4 with only three major suit cards I want to make it as difficult as possible for the opponents to get to a potential major suit contract.

<Sarcasm on>

Having overcalled 2 in the other thread on:

I don't see how I can possibly bid anything other than 2 now that the heart King is actually guarded AND I also have two more trumps!!! This is a MUCH better overcall!!!

</sarcasm off>

3 with the hand above (from the other thread).

5 with this hand. 4 is for wimps. After all, it's only one zero and the likelihood of them having game or slam in a major is simply too high.

(Ok, so maybe the sarcasm wasn't totally off)

was my partner. Suggesting, albeit sarcastically, that there is any correlation between the two is not helpful. We obviously do not think alike.

Actually, JB, correlating your partner's 2C overcall on the earlier string with this question is helpful. If you approve of pard's first 2C overcall, I believe you had better bid 5C, not 4(and certainly not 2C) with this one. Most did not approve of 2C with the previous, and that makes their choice of 4C reasonable here.. It is important that you and your pard agree on the values for various calls, since they affect what happens when those calls are not chosen.

Let me rephrase it in a less frivolous manner then.

If you and your partner do not agree on what kind of hands constitute an overcall and which hands are a preempt, then you are unlikely to ever have any sort of compatible partnership. You will continually be frustrated by the differences of opinion since you will never have any idea of what kind of random hand is being bid on from the other side of the table.

In the other thread, it was not the 3 call that created the problem, it was the 2 overcall. If your partner thinks that he can hold that hand one time, and then the partnership agrees to treat this hand as a preempt, the two of you will never be on the same page. This hand, while 4 or 5 is debatable, is much closer to a simple overcall than the other hand was.

And that is the point I was trying to make. Take it for what its worth. That and a dollar might buy you a soda. :)

Ok, I dont have a serious/regular partnership to develop agreements at this level. Youre right, I am continually frustrated and spinning my wheels trying to make sense of these sequences that end badly.
Oh well, more time to work on my play :)

4 for me..as this looks like a preempt when I have 8 of them and I am actually allowed to have some playing strength when I preempt high.
