I don't disagree with it being imaginative. I do disagree with it being worth considering. It is an overbid and doesn't show the major feature of this hand, the heart suit.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

I guess I might ask the question: would you consider opening 1NT with this hand? If so, then yes the 1NT overcall is definitely worth considering...

That doesn't follow.

I'd most probably open this hand 1NT. But I'd never consider overcalling 1NT here.
Kind regards,

I would not open 1NT with this hand. While it has a nice 5-card suit, given that we have no spots and no aces I don't feel obliged to upgrade the hand. 1H seems a better description given my excellent heart suit. Also (but this is a very minor factor for me) the small doubleton could mean that notrump might be better from partner's side.

You can ask any questions you want but that doesn't make the 1NT overcall any less bad.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

The point here is that whether you overcall 1 or 1NT is not because 1 is right and the other is wrong. It is a matter of style.

vesuvius (what's your name, btw?): if, in your style, you bid michaels on 5-4s frequently, the 1 advance over 1 can be always 5 cards.

This is because overcaller, with a 5-4, would have bid michaels instead of the 1 overcall. If he doesn't michael, he probably doesn't have 4 spades, making the 4 card 1/1 pointless.

Adam :)

and no, we almost always have 5-5 for our michaels bids.

Don't understand this.

Nobody (in their right mind) bids this way.

No idea how common 5-4 is, but I abhor that style. 54 seems to be to be much weaker than 55.
Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.
