If he's 6-5..can 3NT play worse than 4♠ ?.. well maybe..but if he has only 4♠ I'll shoot myself if I bid 4♠ and he goes set.

3NT for me..also...PD is not barred from bidding again.

We have no agreements..I hate to guess.

1NT showed a balanced hand. 2NT denied support for either major. And now 3NT shows both minors very well stopped. Bridge can be so easy sometimes.

That is correct. A direct 1NT would be weak 12-14.

I think 3N is far from obvious. We've already denied 4♠ or 3♥. Have I categorically denied a stiff heart (is a 3=1=5=4 OK for a 1N rebid?). Presumably pard is 4-6, but didn't rebid 4♥ over 1N.

There's two concerns here: pard has a broken heart suit:

On a club lead (even a spade lead), 3N has problems. 4♥ seems much simpler.

Or, pard's hearts are really good:

3N looks hopeless on a club out. 4♥ has chances.

3N is great if pard has the ♦J / ♦A, or the ♣Q.

If I have denied a heart singleton (and I doubt it affects his evaluation much), I'm going to try 3♠. This allows pard to back into 3N with stuff in the minors, or to still try 4♥.

I don't have a stiff heart on this auction. Maybe on a very rare occasion (weak minors, HCP in majors) but then I wouldn't be bidding 3NT now.

Good question, but if pard has described a 6-4, he might pass under the guise that he has described his hand.

Take: Axxx, AJxxxx, x, xx. Wouldn't we want to play 3N opposite that with Qxx, xx, AQJx, AKQT?

and was trying for slam. The funny thing is opener, over 3♥... passed!

He later argued I could have used checkback to create a force, so my bidding would be non forcing. I obviously dismissed his claims as rubbish...
