And if you're afraid of post-maniacs, can't you disable post count in that forum?

Out of curiosity, Free, how many of "several" can you name?
And yes, if you were to post here a vote for Bush or vote for Kerry, I would delete it, even if was posed in the form of "which presidential candidate do BBO members support". If you were to ask where is the best vacation spot in mexico under the guise of "I am traveling to mexico, so where should I go", I would delete it. However, if there was a big international tourney there, and the thread had discussions of BBO members getting together, etc, and that was question was posed I would leave it.
How can a post with such a question be allowed in once case (in larger thread about trip a tournment in mexico and BBO members getting together there), but be deleted if just posed out right as a new thread? Well, that is an editorial decision. This isn't a travel forum, it is a bridge one. Now, put in context, I would delete very little, and I can not think of any "fun" topics off the top of my head that have been deleted. (I did delete a post on buying viagra on line... maybe that was a "fun" one you were talking about).

We all got to know a few extra nicks on BBO we may never have noticed otherwise, it was fun!
IMHO....time to move on!

Another forum I visit has this facility, and everyone on it still talks about the subject the forum was created specifically for (Doctor Who). Even subjects in the off-topic forum still have references to Doctor Who and I don't see any reason why an off-topic folder in this forum would escape references to bridge.
Bridge and general life aren't mutually exclusive. You can talk about both without endangering the foundations of the forum. If you have an off-topic folder, the people who want a little light escapism now and then can talk about the world and life etc. with the friends they have made by coming onto this forum.
The people who only want to talk about bridge are well serviced by the many other folders. They don't even have to go into the off-topic folder.

What is wrong with using other venues for this purpose? I'm sure there are all kinds of bulletin boards, forums, lists, etc., on the Internet. I wouldn't be surprised to learn there is a Dr. Who Web Site.
If there is another forum (as you mentioned) that has this facility, why not tell your friends and congregate there for non-bridge discussion?
The BB Forums are provided free of charge and are specifically for Bridge Base Online, Bridge Base Inc.'s product support, and general Bridge-related discussion. I'm not sure I understand the motivation of trying to subvert this objective (given that there is at least one other, known, forum for non-bridge discussion).

Because half the people on this site wouldn't think about joining the Doctor Who forum and you know it. If I said to everyone: "come on, why don't you all join the Doctor Who forum with me?", do you honestly think anyone except slothy and maybe aisha would join? (And even they'd be under duress.)
In addition, the Doctor Who forum is not free, it costs its owner around $2000 a year, for which many of the members pay a $5 donation. The rest comes from the creator of the site. Despite this, and despite the forum being strongly centred around Doctor Who in all its forms, he still provides sections for everyone to talk about real-world events and random rubbish. The reason being that it's fun. Most of us on the Doctor Who forum are rabid Who fans, but we still don't want to talk about it 100% of the time.
I'm not trying to 'subvert' the objective of talking about bridge, I'm just saying it would provide a little less hardcore bridge talk and a little more fun/sense of community for those members who aren't complete die-hard bridge fanatics and who enjoy the social side of the forum just as much as the bridge chat.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes I really enjoy some of the things people write here, I like the fact that I learned a few things from this forum as well, that I got to know a few people who play bridge online,... The only thing I miss a little bit is some part where we can all go nuts and post something which has nothing to do with bridge, some social room. And that place won't attract the sharks you know, it will only be a little extra for the people which are here for bridge knowledge.
You say to go to another forum for that purpose, but how can we get the people from here to come with us?? If we would post a topic which says "for all off topic stuff go to www.meheheh.com/sheep", it will be deleted as well. The story-thread has proven that such funny off topic threads can be very popular, and it still had some link to BBO-nicknames - which is still not enough according to the current rules.
I can asure you, it won't take the quality of bridge-related discussions down... But honestly I fear that the community isn't ready for an off-topic forum.
And Ben, I'm not interested in what bridge playing people all over the world think about USA politics, and I know nobody would care about who's going to win the next Belgian elections (also soon), but on the other hand, the distance between people at a table shouldn't be that big. And talking during hands or play isn't apreciated as well, so what's left? A chatroom on BBO? Then all people have to be online to talk back...
Too bad, but imo it would be a good thingy. It was just a suggestion, and some suggestions seem to be better than others.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that anyone I've seen post on here is averse to a little banter or is in any way anti-social. I just meant that there are some people that like their chat a little more straight bridge and a little less tomfoolery.
