1) 1NT - (2♣)* - Dbl = ?
*♥ + ♠

2) (1♦) - 1NT - (2♣)* - Dbl = ?
*♥ + ♠

I personally like to play the second sequence as I do the first, but if people think there is a reason to play them differently, I'll listen. The second sequence came up today and partner and I had different views on how we thought the double was played.

all doubles of competitive artificial bids show cards and sets up forcing pass at least below the 3 level. Its like a redouble at the 1 level more or less.

Partner is encouraged to double for penalties.

Personally I prefer it to show cards, and encourage partner to make a takeout-double. (Or bid, the few times he has a hand suitable for that.)

I prefer that it doesn't set up a force.

Card-Showing. All subsequent doubles are penalty, and depending on the vulnerability we could be collecting a number often on a trump lead...

The question here is whether there is a subtle difference in meaning between "stayman" and "values". I think both meanings are similar. The hard part to sort out is when partner should pass the double. Should he pass with a 2=4=3=4 or a 4=2=3=4? What sort of club values should he have if he has 4 of them? (I'm assuming he would pass nearly always with 5 of them).
