I would have no problem opening this hand 3, as my regular partner and I have a special agreement relating to opening 3 of a minor bids in 1st and 2nd seat. The minimum suit requirement is AQ, AK or better. This hand fits the bill, so I would not have any problem with opening 3.

Without this agreement, some might argue that this hand is too good to open 3. I don't see any good alternative to a 3 opening. A 1 opening doesn't do justice to this hand on several levels - understating offensive potential, overstating defensive potential, and losing out preemptively and tactically. As for higher openings, the suit is just not good enough.

I've been experimenting a lot with Richard's theory of game level preempts on 7-4's but I have not been yet convinced. I'll try 4, although I'm not sure this is the bid.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

3d is ok if you bid it tactically from time to time, but if that was my general approach i'd bore myself to death at the bridge table

I wouldn't argue much with three diamonds, but personally I prefer maximum preemption, albeit with some risk of a phantom -500.

Five diamonds seems to increase the risk too much.

4, the suit isn't good enough for 5 and the hand has too much playing strength for 3

Your opening bid?

IMO 1 = 10, 3 = 9, 5 = 6, 4 = 5
Terence Reese would probably have approved of 3. 4 would be fine except that it makes it harder to reach a notrump game. If partner's 4N reply is natural by agreement then that is less of a problem.

4 looks about right. Also, this might induce a 4M "transfer" from opps that partner can crack for a nice round number.

4D.

The suits are too weak for a 5D opening bid.

Voted 1 but if partner prefers some other style it's fine.

I have an aversion against opening 4m on hands that could be useful in 3NT but maybe I should de-learn that aversion, it seems that the experts here as well as in MSC are not too worried about it.

4.
I am really not worried about missing 3N with this hand. If we have 9 top tricks after partner's major suit stopper is knocked out, then partner probably has an ace or two and 5 should do fine.

For me this is too good for 3, not good enough for 5, but a 4 bid shuts the door on us finding 3N and 5 or even 6. I concede that 1 will, however, likely find competition from opps and we may end up in a high level contract anyway as a result. Never the less I prefer to try to keep options open.

With my regular p I open 3NT showing the equivalent of a 4m bid. Otherwise, 4.
