I must admit, I see no way to make this hand with even modest defense much less good defense. We get set up a on this lead, and there is no way to shorten south;s hand enough for a trump coup, much less a late entry to dummy. Did you input the hands right? (else there is a super duper play here I am missing).

Let me first give u a way to 10 tricks whit only the lead of hart 9 to consider.

trick 1:. 9-2-Q-A
trick 2: J-4-3-K
trick 3:7-2-6-5
trick 4:3-2-10-A
trick 5:east are endplayed,if he return -u are in dummy and trow ur loosers and take spade finnes,if he play Q-K u duck and ceep ur entry in table, , defence get 1 , 1 and 1

but u do a small mistake in 2 trick and play club to 10, can u still make it???

i dont say it really is a mistake playing club to 10 in trick 2 i just suggest a line to 10 tricks whit a mild defence:)) opps play 3 times H

Ok... maybe i am missing something the, ,but I stick with my vote and want to defend against 4X rather than play it... as it can not make imho.

But then this is the problem with "polls" for line of play.. All of us who check defend may or maynot see that at trick three right after winning the !CA over the Club Ten, we must return the Heart ten, giving declearer two heart tricks... but then again, the poll didn't stretch us... we may get it right by blind guess.

Can't East simply duck the CT?

No... not if you want to defeat the contract....When the T holds, dummy continues a K, and ruffs out your ACE.. then exits a Jack..and for fun, can let your Ten win two, or ruff it an play a to dummy 8.

I think a at trick 2 is the best line for the declarer and it requires accurate defense to defeat it after that. If you play J at trick 2, then it is very easy for the defense to prevail by just backing a small as s have not been setup as yet. This will ensure 1 trick in each suit for the defense.

So assuming declarer plays a to ten at trick 2. Now as Ben has already mentioned, ten return will defeat the contract.

a)If declarer plays 10/9/7 from hand and 5 from table, duck it
b)If declarer plays a small to J/8 win and return 7 which declarer has to ruff - after ruffing if declarer plays 10/9/7 from hand and 5 from table again duck it. Declarer will have to concede 2 s in the end.

You only need to make sure that declarer does not get an entry to table in suit or by a ruff and discard.

How strong that 6 of is a card for defense!

Helium has stipulated that H comprise the first 3 tricks

As i can understand, helium suggests that playing a club at trick 2 is a mistake whereas i think that it is the best line giving enough scope for defenders to falter at various stages of play.

And his suggested winning line is on the assumption that defenders will continue passively with a heart at trick 3. This just requires a small diamond return at trick 3 and thereafter the defense is in full control. Helium has not stipulated that first 3 tricks be hearts - he just assumed that they will be in his suggested winning line..

trick 2:♥ J-4-3-K

OK I misunderstood this. I assumed he was saying this was the line that had to be played.

...................................................Hi all!..........................................................
I voted to defend, because in my opinion in the real life will be hard for the declarer to make it. I hate the double dummy analysis - it is too far from the reality. The best line of play is to finesse directly 10, because it give most chances for defenders for mistake. It is true, that 10 will kill the contract, but what about AJ8 and Ax? In same case right continuation is K and 10 next...By the way nice example why second is better than top of nothing ;) .

Hi:)) i agree the best line is to play club to the 10 in trick 2.
BUT,....now as ben has notist is only the defence of playing the 10 of hart back thats set it. if u dont do that he will always make 10 tricks.

there is really no way to beat this if u dont give avay a hart trick in 3th trick.
thats the clue of this game.

and i am sure all the voters dont use this defence when they vote,

exsept ben:)) wd

AND TO THE VOTE, I WANT TO PLAY THIS. I REALLY DONT THING MY OPPS WILL FIND THE SPECTACULAR DEFENCE PLAYING 10 IN TRICK 3.
AND IF THEY DO....................
I REALLY WHOULD HAVE A BIG SMILE ON MY MOUTH,AND BE HAPPY TO GO ONE DOWN, THIS DEFENCE IS NOT SOMTHING U SEE AT THE TABLE
foole me once, shame one you!!
foole me twice, shame on me....!!

..................................................Hi helium!.....................................................
...I am sure you will be not happy declarer, if you play against most of the bulgarian experts, because they play only count and lead 4th from 4 small cards too. The lead will be not 9 but 4th small . When declarer play to finesse with 10, will be given count (odd) and is easy to play 10 - nothing to lose, can go down 2 if p have J... I mean real experts like Rumen, Kalin, Boian... If you like you can ask him, I know you play with him sometimes (BBO nick PPilot)

Play it. I will play the 7 of at trick 2. and then ruffing the 3rd I will play a to dummies 10. And finesse the if my cl trick wins. But double dummy is always something up one way or the other.

Mike

On this line you will be certainly 2 down. RHO wins the spade and returns a small spade. You have not set up clubs - so you will end up losing 1 spade , 1 heart, 1 club and 2 diamonds.
