Here's the link to the video:

[Link removed by administrator while we determine the appropriateness of such a link on this site. When I first saw this thread, i watched the link and responded without thinking much about its approriateness. After three complaints to me and several complaints in this thread itself, I decided to take this step until the moderator of this forum could make a ruling. - inquiry ]

Now the policeman was punished. He did get a 30 day suspension, but not for the murder. It seems that the officer was a bit late for work on the day of the execution, and although the authorities in Chicago tolerate murder on camera, tardiness is not acceptable, and so the officer was punished for that. If he'd been on time when he put a bullet in the man's head, there would have been no punishment at all.

What is horrific to me is that I am convinced there are people who would watch this video and notice the young man was wearing his hat backwards and assume he was a gang member and thus deserving of his fate.

Thanks for the video. This is an even better example of what I'm talking about. And this is the tip of the iceberg. The thin blue line is one of those near-universal truths (at least in America) that nobody talks about (much like the snares near Cowslip's warren in Watership Down.)

The kind of people who tend to desperately want to be police officers (control freak insecure sociopathic types) are exactly the kind of people who never should be allowed to be police officers. Unfortunately, for some strange reason it's the people who want the job that usually end up with it. Then they swear allegiance to a code that demands that they overlook the behavior of their fellow officers. It's a vicious cycle and has been for generations.

Anyway, at the end of the day this is a bridge forum but thanks again for the video.

Here's a little more on the story.

What was the media impact of this case?

In Italy a case of a football fan who was shot dead by the police led to mass demonstrations. Thousands attended his funeral.

This one is clear case of manslaughter by the officer. He used excessive force, wasn't in uniform, didn't have the proper equipment. I also wonder why he only dragged one participant in the fight away.

Let me see If I understand this, the video says a man was murdered by a cop and:
1) The cops did nothing?
2) Chief of Police did nothing?
3) City Council of Chicago did nothing?
4) Mayor did nothing?
5) District Attorney did nothing?
6) State did nothing?
7) Federal Gov did nothing?
8) People/voters of Chicago did nothing?

Hmm and who is at fault or are we all just victims?

Quick comment about this thread:

As I've mentioned before, I have somewhat mixed feelings about the Watercooler. I'm not sure whether or not it serves a constructive purpose.

One thing that I am sure about: I don't think that its in BBO's interest for the forums to degenerate into random political debate. I think that its reasonable to differentiate between two types of users of these forums:

1. Individuals who are primarily here because it is a bridge site and (occasionally) like to argue about politics with one another

2. Individuals who seem to be drawn here looking for a political argument.

Over the past couple weeks, we've had an influx of new members who seem primarily interested in the political threads but don't show any real interest in discussing bridge.

I'm not arguing that BBO should censor these individuals. However, I am noting that I'm not going bother engaging in any of these threads.

I think it is completely inappropriate to be posting youtube videos of a person being shot in the head in the Bridge Base Forums.
Disclaimer: The above post may be a half-baked sarcastic rant intended to stimulate discussion and it does not necessarily coincide with my own views on this topic.

Nobody did that. Somebody posted a link. Maybe you think that's inappropriate too. If so, then it must be that the subject is, in itself, inappropriate for discussion here, because you can't rationally discuss such things without viewing the evidence. Certainly the most likely response to a bald assertion, with no link, would be "where's the evidence?"

This forum is specifically for discussing this kind of thing, and specifically not for discussing bridge.

I hadn't noticed any strangers - but then I don't know everybody here, either.

Nobody has to participate in these discussions (or any others, for that matter). If you don't want to, then don't. :)

Here's a hint about that last: the more people don't participate in a thread, the sooner it dies out. B)

If the video's narrative is 100% correct, then this is outrageous. Of course I think Jon's comments were way out of line.

of course it is 100% correct that is why people of chicago and all the institutions do nothing...lol..........

or it is not 100% correct and someone does something.

Note this happened in 2003 only 4 years ago and what is the news since then?

Did the people or voters of Chicago do anything? We are only talking about millions of people over years and years..so.......and this is only murder we are discussing...so ..........

I can only say on my many trips to Chicago and many discussions over the years.....no one brought this up.....
