Quite different from my last post about risky bidding, this time it's a serious underbid, resulting in a missed vul game, and a serious loss of IMP to the opps too
I was East, and opened 2NT on this 21HCP hand, thinking that 2NT opening refers to 20-21 HCP, balanced hand.
Partner passes with a 10HCP hand...
Are there any other alternative interpretations of a 2NT opener that are commonly used which may account for the pass by west? Becoz this is just a random partner from a casual MBC game...
Or should I not have opened 2NT after all?
Plz tell me ur opinion or the correct bidding sequence

Depending on the juristiction that you play under, there are several possible meanings for a 2NT opening.

For example, in the EBU land at level IV I play that a 2NT opening shows a destructive pre-empt in either minor.

Showing a weak hand (5-9 HCP) with both minors (5-5 shape) is also common.

However, these sort of hands require significant agreement with your partner, and wouldn't involve a pass by partner.

Without any agreement to the contrary I would open your hand 2NT every day of the week, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over the matter. Your partner has a huge amount extra, and slam is a reasonable bet on these cards.

I like the sequence:

2NT 3H (Transfer to spades)
3S 4C
4D 4S
6S

2NT is entirely normal on your hand. Partner's pass isn't.

As mr1303 said, there are some alternate meanings, but they're usually so artificial that partner can never pass them, certainly not with the random 10 count this partner had. He didn't give any explanation for his strange pass? Not even a "sorry pd, I misclicked"? I've occasionally passed when I didn't notice that my partner had opened, and I always say something like this when dummy goes down (or after the hand if we end up defending).
