Scoring: IMP

W N E S
2D X P 3D
P 3H P ?

2D-natural and weak.

You are down 16 at the half of a K.O. match - early in the second half this swingy-looking hand is dealt. How do you procede? Do you have agreements to cover continuations here? Would 4C be a cue bid or black suits? Does 4D confirm hearts as trumps or does that show the blacks? Does partner's 3H show a minimum and does it deny 4/4 in the majors?

Where do you go from here?

And if partner bids 4S over 4D - are you on the same wavelength? Is this a cue in support of hearts or does he think you might be 4315 or such and is still searching for the right game contract?

This is really getting tricky now. I really hate hate hate cuebidding at the 4 level...one more example now. :)

Believe it or not I am going to bid 5d now. Yes, I think I know what that means but I am prepared to say sorry and move on to the next hand. Why is this even more confusing for me....because if my 4d bid agreed hearts....if......then 4s is now kickback :).

If my 4d bid was just some general forward going bid..pard bid something we may have a mess :).

I interpret 3H as a minimum hand, and sign off in 4H.

If I thought it was strong (which would imply that 3D showed at least a pretty good hand), I would cue bid 4C.

Assuming 3D creates a game force, should doubler show his values first or try first to establish the fit? After all, responder does not have to guarantee 4/4 or better majors in this auction I wouldn't think. What would responder do with a hand such as KJxx, Qx, xx AQxxx? Make it even harder with Qx, KJxx, xx, AQxxx and partner bids 3S, surely denying 4 hearts....now does 4C show clubs and hearts or is it a cue bid in support of spades?

Winston - don't you think a direct 4 call is a better description?

Something is amiss here. Pard doubles, and RHO doesn't raise. Either he's playing games with 5 diamonds, or pard has diamond length; and therefore a real good hand.

I think I'll try 4 now.

It probably is dependent upon agreements. There is a good case to me made for 4D, because of how much room it chews, to simply be used as game force with no real slam interest and saying pick a major.

If you try 3D-3H-4D, (as I did), partner will continue with 4S. What now? Is this confirming hearts and a cue or still a search for the right game contract?

What would an initial 4D show? Is it stronger or weaker than 3D in your agreements?
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?

I think 4 shows a hand that wants to play game in a suit, has doubt about the strain and in principle, shows no slam ambitions.

3 is a more ambiguous cue bid, you might be looking for 3NT, or it might be the start of a slam try.
If the auction starts (2) X 3 3

now 3 is natural and forcing.. over this 4 is natural and 4 agrees
4 is natural and forcing
4 agrees
